professional relationships
Week One
Introduction to the module
2. What will we be doing today?
• Getting to know each other
• Finding out what the module is about
3. Some advice
• Both assessments for this module require you to reflect and report on
your experiences throughout the module
• To do this effectively, keep notes of your experiences from the
beginning
• Don’t make these wholly descriptive [e.g. I/we did …] but reflective
[e.g. I learnt …]
4. Getting to know each other
• Who am I? [5 minutes + 10 minutes feedback]
• Either individually or with the person sitting next to you, make a few notes
about who I am based on your observations alone.
• BE PREPARED TO SHARE THESE WITH ME AND THE GROUP!
• How accurate were you?
• How do you think I felt being ‘judged’ in this way?
• How do you feel when this happens to you?
• What lesson can you take away from this exercise?
5. Getting to know each other
• Two-minute mixer [15 – 20 minutes to include 5 minutes feedback]
• Talk to the person nearest to you for two minutes about anything you
like, then switch to someone new when you hear the timer.
• Make sure that both people in each pair get a chance to speak!
• Suggested topics –a person who inspires you, your most important
value, concerns about the coming academic year, your work
experience, your ambitions [Mix them up!]
6. Getting to know each other
• Two-minute mixer
• Feedback – what did you learn from that exercise about:
• yourself
• your colleagues in the group
7. Sharing achievements
Small groups [maximum 5 people]
10 minutes
• Think back to SH4052 Personal & Professional Development; self-
management.

from this module in relation to:
• communication skills [be specific!] and
• resolving conflict?
8. Identifying Goals
Small groups [maximum 5 people]
10 minutes
• Again, thinking back to SH4052 Personal & Professional Development;
self-management
• Thinking about your Development Plan, discuss how the learning
needs identified as part of this align with the module learning
outcomes.
9. Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module, you will be able to:

demonstrate how this is incorporated into professional practice
• Reflect constructively on professional learning and identify areas for future
development of your individual knowledge and skills
10. Feedback on Achievement and Goals
Whole group discussion
10 minutes

[one mark awarded].
• crucial that each group member contributes equitably to the production of
this report.
13. Fortnightly Sessions & Assessment
• You will be provided with a number of scenarios
• each scenario will identify a task
• over the course of the module, additional information will be
provided and tasks set related to the scenario
• In order to respond effectively & to produce a successful assessment,
you will need to learn how to function as a team.
