Created for Bethlehem Catholic High School to inform students about Desmond Tutu\'s role during Apartheid and Mpho Tutu\'s role in taking a stand against social issues occurring in our world today

1. Social Justice Mpho “Oompa” Tutu & Desmond Tutu Friday June 5th 2009, the Bethlehem Stars have the great pleasure of having Mpho Tutu at our school. She will discuss social justice issues occurring in our world today. Before you learn about her, it is critical to learn about her father, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and understand how it all started. ** He is Archbishop of the Anglican Church in South Africa. The head of the Anglican Church is the King or Queen of England, instead of the Pope for the Catholic Church. 2. During Apartheid Apartheid was a system of legal racial segregation executed by the National Party in South Africa, between 1948 and 1994. The new legislation during 1948, classified inhabitants into racial groups (black, white, colored - mixed race). Residential areas were separated by means of force. 80% of the South African population were forced onto only about 13% of the land. The government segregated education, medical care, and other public service. They provided black people with services inferior to those of whites. Uprisings and protests were met with banning of opposition and imprisoning of anti-apartheid leaders such as Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu. ** If you would like to learn more about the Apartheid, ask a history teacher near you. **

3. Prime Minister, John Vorster, later replaced by P.W. Botha, would not respond or make any changes. Archbishop Desmond Tutu stepped in in order to bring pressure on the white South African government. Dedicated men and women were bringing the abuse of human rights to focus.

4. Desmond Tutu’s role during Apartheid As repression continued, so did the violence. Desmond Tutu was committed to a nonviolent resistance. He supported an economic boycott of his country. Disinvestment succeeded, pressuring the government toward reform. Tutu continued to add pressure to the government. He organized peaceful marches which brought as many as 30,000 people onto the streets of Cape Town. Within months, Nelson Mandela was freed from prison. Both Mandela and Tutu continued to fight Apartheid, which then began to collapse. Tutu frequently encourages reconciliation between all parties involved in apartheid through his writings and lectures.

5. Desmond Tutu’s role since Apartheid He continues to fight major social issues in our world today such as: HIV/AIDS Homophobia Poverty Racial prejudice Inequality against women For his efforts, he received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1985. He also received the Albert Schweitzer Prize for Humanitarianism and the Gandhi Peace Prize in 2005.

6. Mpho Tutu ReverandMpho Tutu, ordained by her father, continues her father’s footsteps in fighting injustice around the world. Before she entered seminary, Mpho ran programs for children from poor and single-parent homes. She also developed a pastoral care program for rape survivors, and a shelter for women and children who suffered from domestic violence.

7. Mpho was Director of The Bishop Desmond Tutu Southern African Refugee Scholarship Fund. This organization provides college education to refugees from South Africa and Nimibia. Mpho also worked for Get Ahead Foundation, which helped raise money to build schools in rural South Africa. Like her father, Mpho preached and spoken at many churches, schools, colleges, and organizations throughout the world.

9. Today, Desmond Tutu is a widely known modern peacemaker. His Daughter, Mpho Tutu continues his legacy in taking a stand against social issues occurring in our world today. As a school with social justice focus, we have the pleasure of having Mpho Tutu at Bethlehem Catholic High School, next Friday on June 5th.
