An Observation Guide for the Learners’ Characteristics

Read the following statements carefully. Then write your observation report on the
provided space.

1. As you observe the class, look into the characteristics of the learners. Note their ages
2. How many boys are there? How many girls?
3. Focus on their behavior. Are they already able to manage their own behavior?
4. Can the learners already work independently?
5. Describe their span of attention.
6. Look into their listening skills and ability to concentrate.

Name of the School: Naval SPEd Center
Observed: Grade II
Location of the School: Garcia St, Naval, Biliran
Date of Visit: February 26, 2013

As I have observe the pupils are that clumsy-type and hyper active. Their ages varies
from 7 ½ to 8 ½ for boys and 7 ½ - 8 for girls. There are 22 boys and 24 girls in the classroom
and with the total of 46 pupils.

Since they are still young, almost all of them do not know yet how to
manage their behavior. They can write and read with their own but they
still need teacher’s assistance. Their attention or span of attention is too
short. They can focus for just a few minutes and after that, they usually
make noise and some are keep on roaming around the classroom.

As what I have seen, most but not all of the pupils pay attention to
the discussion especially those who are seating in front. Thus they could
easily answer what the teacher asks. Considering the pupils who didn’t
listen to the discussion, pupils seating at the back, the teacher should
repeat what she had said in order for them to understand and learn the
lesson.
An Observation Guide for the CLASSROOM VISIT

Be guided by these questions as you do your observation of the classroom management.
It is also good to ask the teacher for additional information so you can verify your observation.
Write your notes below; and then organize your data in the table that follows.

   1. Are there areas in the classroom for specific purposes (storage of teaching aids, books,
students’ belongings, supplies, etc...) Describe these areas.
   2. Are there rules and procedures posted in the room?
   3. Did the students participate in making the classroom rules? (Ask the Resource Teacher.)
   4. What are the daily routines done by the teacher? (Prayer, attendance, assignment of
monitors, warm-up, activities, etc.) How are they done?
   5. Is there a seating arrangement? What is the basis of this arrangement?
   6. Observe the noise level in the classroom. How is this managed?
   7. If a learner is not following instructions or is off-task, what does the teacher do? Describe
      the behavior strategies used.
   8. What does the teacher do to reinforce positive behaviors? (behavior strategies)

Yes, there are specific areas in the classroom for specific purposes, like
for example the storage of teaching aids, this storage is located on the side
of the classroom where in it is arrange properly, I think according to the
arrangement also of the lesson in period, and it is easy access whenever
the teacher needs it for discussion. Another is books also which is used as a
reference of the teacher and for students are also available in a specific
area in the classroom, they called it as a mini library. And also with the
other things that are important in the classroom are also available inside
for a specific purpose, and is easy accessible by the teacher or students
whenever they need it in the teaching learning process.
Yes, also the rules and procedures are posted in the classroom, like
the rules in using the comfort room; it is being posted on the door of the
comfort room, and others rules in the classroom are properly posted inside.
According to the resource teacher, since they are young at age, they
have not participated in the making of those rules, but it was properly
explained to the class for them to follow.
The teacher has the daily routines before they start the day, they
always have the prayer, after which is they let the pupils pick up pieces of
garbage’s under their chairs, the teacher also monitor the attendance in
the morning and also in the afternoon, and also before the start of the
lesson assignment should be check or submitted if there is.
The classroom consists of five rectangular tables, which can occupy
six pupils in each, the arrangement of the tables, there are three in front
and two ate the back.
The noise level in the classroom is manageable by the teacher; the
teacher is trying to catch their attention all the time so that by asking
question whenever the teacher feels that particular pupils are not listening
in the discussion.
If this happens, learning is off-task, the teacher asks the pupils to
participate and ask questions if possible for the pupils to be clarified.
To reinforce positive behavior, it should start from the teacher, and
values should also be integrated in the lesson all the time, for them also to
learn positive behavior.
CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT MATRIX

classroom where in it is arrange any task or activities that the
properly teacher has give to them.
2. Classroom Rules Rules and procedures are posted These aid the pupils to learn how
properly in a specific area in the to follow instruction or rules in the
                            classroom. classroom.
3. Classroom Procedures The teacher always gives This will make the learners to
motivations to the learners, warm become lively and enthusiastic.

5. Seating Arrangement The classroom consists of five The seating arrangement for me is
rectangular tables, which can perfect, because this kind of
occupy six pupils in each, the arrangement is fair to all the
arrangement of the tables, there are learners, and for them also easy to
three in front and two ate the participate in any discussion, this
back. arrangement, pupils are visible to
                                                                        the teacher.
6. Handling misbehavior/off The teacher should give This will affect to the pupils by,

                                                                        them action in every misbehavior
                                                                        they will make.
7. Reinforcement of Positive Reinforce positive behavior, it These will help the student build
Behavior should start from the teacher, and positive values and behavior, by
values are always integrated in the seeing from the teacher a positive

integrated in the lesson easy for the
                                                                        pupils to remember
My Analysis
1. How did the classroom organization and routines affect the learners’ behavior?

The classroom organization affect the learners’ behavior
by they have seen that a well organize things make them easy
and comfortable in any task or activities that the teacher has
given to them. Aside from that they might also be organizing
their own things or rooms in their respective house.
The daily routines also affect the learners’ behavior by
always going to school early and not to be late, because every
morning the teacher will monitor their attendance and also
since a prayer is part of the daily routines it helps the learners
build their spiritual relationship with God.

2. What should the teacher have in mind when she/he designs the classroom
organization and routines? What theories and principles should you have in mind?

I think the teacher consider the ages or levels of the
learners in a particular classroom, also their characteristics
and behavior in designing or organizing the classroom as well
   doing the daily routines.
I think the theory of Jean Piaget; the Cognitive
Development Theory is being applied. Piaget’s theory of
cognitive development described stages that children pass
through in the development of intelligence and formal
thought process. According to him, the changes in behavior
that occur during development are the results of changes in
one’s ability to reason about the world around him.
3. Which behavior strategies were effective in managing the behavior of the learners?
In motivating students? Why were they effective?

In my own opinion, it is very effective when the teacher
should be strict in terms of class discussion because I have
observed, this could help the learner to strive hard and to
ensure themselves to participate in the discussion. And it is also
a matter of discipline for the students who feel tired in school
especially for those students who are fond of “pawala lang”
and not giving the value of how education can change their
lives and their future. Therefore, I can say that this is very
effective in motivating the attention of the students who have
less able in attention in the classroom.

       My Reflections

1. Imagine yourself organizing your classroom in the future. In what grade/year level
do you see yourself? What routines and procedures would you consider for this
   level? Why?

I can see myself organizing a classroom of fourth grader,
it’s really the fourth grader that I want to teach in the future,
aside from they are already have the age that can easily
understand things, is that also a fourth grader is also level
wherein I can say that they are on the preparation for a
   difficult lesson.
As a professional teacher daily routines should always be
done, routines like prayer, monitoring of attendance,
cleaning the classroom and arranging of the chairs, before
2. Make a list of the rules you are likely to implement in this level. Why would you
   choose these rules?

These are the primary rules that I want to implement in this
   level:

Be respectful of yourself and others.
Raise your hand before you speak during a
            classroom lesson.
Listen quietly while others are speaking.
            Obey all school rules.

Well, I choose this rules to implement for this level, I
order to have a harmonious classroom for them. And
with these rules also pupils are building a positive
   behavior in them.

3. Should learners be involved in making the class rules? Why?

Absolutely yes, the students should be involved in making
these classroom rules for the reason that they should be aware of
such thing also, in order for the students to be well-oriented and
have an idea already whatever sanction might be given if ever
they will violate the said rules and implementation inside the
classroom and so that the teacher will have no further
explanation since it is already agreed between the teacher and
the students.
My Portfolio

Include here pictures of the classroom/s you observed. Write
descriptions/annotations about what you observed in each photo.

This is the classroom/s in the Naval SPED
                                       Center that I have observed.

Specific area in the classroom is their
reading materials or they called it
mini library, wherein they have their
   reading materials available,
whenever they used it for their
   lessons.

                                              Specific area in the classroom
wherein projects and outputs of the
learners are located. These are also
                                              used discussion purposes.

Fs 1 episode 3

  • 1. My Tools Use the activity form provided for you to document your observations. An Observation Guide for the Learners’ Characteristics Read the following statements carefully. Then write your observation report on the provided space. 1. As you observe the class, look into the characteristics of the learners. Note their ages 2. How many boys are there? How many girls? 3. Focus on their behavior. Are they already able to manage their own behavior? 4. Can the learners already work independently? 5. Describe their span of attention. 6. Look into their listening skills and ability to concentrate. Name of the School: Naval SPEd Center Observed: Grade II Location of the School: Garcia St, Naval, Biliran Date of Visit: February 26, 2013 As I have observe the pupils are that clumsy-type and hyper active. Their ages varies from 7 ½ to 8 ½ for boys and 7 ½ - 8 for girls. There are 22 boys and 24 girls in the classroom and with the total of 46 pupils. Since they are still young, almost all of them do not know yet how to manage their behavior. They can write and read with their own but they still need teacher’s assistance. Their attention or span of attention is too short. They can focus for just a few minutes and after that, they usually make noise and some are keep on roaming around the classroom. As what I have seen, most but not all of the pupils pay attention to the discussion especially those who are seating in front. Thus they could easily answer what the teacher asks. Considering the pupils who didn’t listen to the discussion, pupils seating at the back, the teacher should repeat what she had said in order for them to understand and learn the lesson.
  • 2. An Observation Guide for the CLASSROOM VISIT Be guided by these questions as you do your observation of the classroom management. It is also good to ask the teacher for additional information so you can verify your observation. Write your notes below; and then organize your data in the table that follows. 1. Are there areas in the classroom for specific purposes (storage of teaching aids, books, students’ belongings, supplies, etc...) Describe these areas. 2. Are there rules and procedures posted in the room? 3. Did the students participate in making the classroom rules? (Ask the Resource Teacher.) 4. What are the daily routines done by the teacher? (Prayer, attendance, assignment of monitors, warm-up, activities, etc.) How are they done? 5. Is there a seating arrangement? What is the basis of this arrangement? 6. Observe the noise level in the classroom. How is this managed? 7. If a learner is not following instructions or is off-task, what does the teacher do? Describe the behavior strategies used. 8. What does the teacher do to reinforce positive behaviors? (behavior strategies) Yes, there are specific areas in the classroom for specific purposes, like for example the storage of teaching aids, this storage is located on the side of the classroom where in it is arrange properly, I think according to the arrangement also of the lesson in period, and it is easy access whenever the teacher needs it for discussion. Another is books also which is used as a reference of the teacher and for students are also available in a specific area in the classroom, they called it as a mini library. And also with the other things that are important in the classroom are also available inside for a specific purpose, and is easy accessible by the teacher or students whenever they need it in the teaching learning process. Yes, also the rules and procedures are posted in the classroom, like the rules in using the comfort room; it is being posted on the door of the comfort room, and others rules in the classroom are properly posted inside. According to the resource teacher, since they are young at age, they have not participated in the making of those rules, but it was properly explained to the class for them to follow. The teacher has the daily routines before they start the day, they always have the prayer, after which is they let the pupils pick up pieces of garbage’s under their chairs, the teacher also monitor the attendance in
  • 3. the morning and also in the afternoon, and also before the start of the lesson assignment should be check or submitted if there is. The classroom consists of five rectangular tables, which can occupy six pupils in each, the arrangement of the tables, there are three in front and two ate the back. The noise level in the classroom is manageable by the teacher; the teacher is trying to catch their attention all the time so that by asking question whenever the teacher feels that particular pupils are not listening in the discussion. If this happens, learning is off-task, the teacher asks the pupils to participate and ask questions if possible for the pupils to be clarified. To reinforce positive behavior, it should start from the teacher, and values should also be integrated in the lesson all the time, for them also to learn positive behavior.

  • 5. My Analysis 1. How did the classroom organization and routines affect the learners’ behavior? The classroom organization affect the learners’ behavior by they have seen that a well organize things make them easy and comfortable in any task or activities that the teacher has given to them. Aside from that they might also be organizing their own things or rooms in their respective house. The daily routines also affect the learners’ behavior by always going to school early and not to be late, because every morning the teacher will monitor their attendance and also since a prayer is part of the daily routines it helps the learners build their spiritual relationship with God. 2. What should the teacher have in mind when she/he designs the classroom organization and routines? What theories and principles should you have in mind? I think the teacher consider the ages or levels of the learners in a particular classroom, also their characteristics and behavior in designing or organizing the classroom as well doing the daily routines. I think the theory of Jean Piaget; the Cognitive Development Theory is being applied. Piaget’s theory of cognitive development described stages that children pass through in the development of intelligence and formal thought process. According to him, the changes in behavior that occur during development are the results of changes in one’s ability to reason about the world around him.
  • 6. 3. Which behavior strategies were effective in managing the behavior of the learners? In motivating students? Why were they effective? In my own opinion, it is very effective when the teacher should be strict in terms of class discussion because I have observed, this could help the learner to strive hard and to ensure themselves to participate in the discussion. And it is also a matter of discipline for the students who feel tired in school especially for those students who are fond of “pawala lang” and not giving the value of how education can change their lives and their future. Therefore, I can say that this is very effective in motivating the attention of the students who have less able in attention in the classroom. My Reflections 1. Imagine yourself organizing your classroom in the future. In what grade/year level do you see yourself? What routines and procedures would you consider for this level? Why? I can see myself organizing a classroom of fourth grader, it’s really the fourth grader that I want to teach in the future, aside from they are already have the age that can easily understand things, is that also a fourth grader is also level wherein I can say that they are on the preparation for a difficult lesson. As a professional teacher daily routines should always be done, routines like prayer, monitoring of attendance, cleaning the classroom and arranging of the chairs, before
  • 7. 2. Make a list of the rules you are likely to implement in this level. Why would you choose these rules? These are the primary rules that I want to implement in this level: Be respectful of yourself and others. Raise your hand before you speak during a classroom lesson. Listen quietly while others are speaking. Obey all school rules. Well, I choose this rules to implement for this level, I order to have a harmonious classroom for them. And with these rules also pupils are building a positive behavior in them. 3. Should learners be involved in making the class rules? Why? Absolutely yes, the students should be involved in making these classroom rules for the reason that they should be aware of such thing also, in order for the students to be well-oriented and have an idea already whatever sanction might be given if ever they will violate the said rules and implementation inside the classroom and so that the teacher will have no further explanation since it is already agreed between the teacher and the students.
  • 8. My Portfolio Include here pictures of the classroom/s you observed. Write descriptions/annotations about what you observed in each photo. This is the classroom/s in the Naval SPED Center that I have observed. Specific area in the classroom is their reading materials or they called it mini library, wherein they have their reading materials available, whenever they used it for their lessons. Specific area in the classroom wherein projects and outputs of the learners are located. These are also used discussion purposes.
