WLAN and AirDefense: K12 Success Story
Keller Independent School District
• Large suburban school district outside Dallas; 35 schools
• Older wireless deployed in many schools; Cisco shop
• Needed to migrate entire district to 802.11n to support video in
classrooms and 1:1 computing; also needed to manage network in most efficient manner
• Decided to replace all wireless and go with Motorola district wide for two reasons:
• Management capabilities and AirDefense’ remote troubleshooting features
• Only vendor that can support their video delivery system (SAFARI Montage) in a
dense wireless environment

Campus Connectivity
Problem
• Need cost-effective way to connect remote higher ed
campuses or schools across a district
• T1’s are slow and expensive; fiber is just expensive
Solution
Benefits
• Very cost-effective; typical ROI in 1-2 years
• Enables bandwidth intensive applications like video,
voice, and distance learning
• Multiple bands, scalable throughput of over 300 Mbps,
distances up to 150 miles, top performing in Non- and
Near-Line-of-Sight situations
• E-Rate Priority 1 eligible for K12, other federal funding
vehicles available
Point-to-Point, Point-to-Multipoint wireless bridges
Ideal Applications:
•Rural K12 Schools
•Community colleges
with satellite campuses

Campus Connectivity IN ACTION
Aurora Public Schools – Colorado
• Large K-12 district needed to upgrade from T1’s to support video and
distance learning between 27 schools
• Skeptical of wireless due to mountainous terrain, line of sight issues
• Deployed PTP400 and PTP600 links
• Point-to-Point links improved reliability, dramatically increased
bandwidth, and reduced monthly costs by thousands
Texas A&M University
• Nine-university system needed cost-effective high-speed connectivity
to 24 school districts in Southeast Texas for distance learning programs
• Deployed Point-to-Point and Point-to-Multipoint networks
• Higher bandwidth and lower cost than leased lines; much more cost-
effective than microwave
• Their 25+ mile near-LOS hops still achieve 10x the bandwidth of a T1

Bridging the Digital Divide
• Schools and colleges uniquely positioned to bring broadband service into underserved
communities – many schools are the only point within a community with a high speed
pipe
• Schools’ Internet access often goes unused on nights & weekends
• Online curricula and device programs require reliable broadband for students at home
Federal Funding Making This Possible
• Obama Administration has prioritized rural broadband
• Several funding programs, such as BTOP, are available to cover such deployments
Technical Requirements
• Requires full suite of wireless
technologies:
• Outdoor wireless broadband for
distribution to schools
• Indoor and outdoor access to
homes and mobile users

  1. Introduction
  2. Motorola is perhaps the best kept secret in WLAN infrastructure solutions. Many of our prospective customers are not aware of our position in the marketplace, so it should be communicated to build credibility. If we have a weakness in our past, it certainly isn’t technology, but rather our focus on marketing it. Motorola’s customer base includes many of the world’s largest retailers, healthcare institutions, transportation companies, and manufacturers – to name a few – all of whom rely on a Motorola backbone for their mission-critical mobility needs. A few facts on Motorola’s Wireless LAN Market Leadership: Invented the first spread spectrum access point, first wireless voice of WiFi phone, and the industries first WLAN switch architecture Over 125,000 WLAN switches sold – 2X more than Cisco, the next closest competitor. The most widely deployed and thoroughly tested switch solution on the market #1 or #2 in WLAN revenue in many key vertical markets: retail, healthcare, manufacturing, transportation and logistics. When Motorola focuses on a market, we provide the right overall solution. Hence our leadership in these key areas Largest WLAN deployment in the world with 100,000 APs and over 10,000 switches Largest wireless VoIP deployment with 40,000 Spectralink phones on our WLAN Winner of the Beijing Olympics, over Cisco and Aruba
