2. TEXT 1: LIBRARY VODCAST SERIES: ASSOCIATING YOUR STUDENT CARD.
The text in this film is presented as a short online instructional video. The medium of production
for this text involves film, and the information displayed demonstrates non-written factual text.
The text in the film corresponds with the procedure style of text, and the content forms a simple
instructional presentation. Throughout the video the presenters identify the statement of
objective, the essential items required and the sequence of events. The video is a verbal form of
communication that presents factual information to an audience and involves questions between
the interviewer and interviewee. The film shows characteristics of both the presentation and the
interview type of report. The facts are explained using present tense, and the language used
throughout the film is subjective language, since the presenters use the word ‘you’ throughout
the video. The word ‘you’ is a second person address that illustrates the presenters are trying to
create a connection with the audience. They also demonstrate informal language throughout the
film with the use of colloquialisms, contractions and improper words. In addition, simple
sentences are used throughout the text, with some sentences being incomplete due to
interruptions from the other presenter.
3. TEXT 2: WRITING AN ESSAY
The focus of this text is to present a logical well sequenced and factual document for students in
the form of a short self help guide. The medium of production used for this text is print, and the
information throughout the document is clearly factual. The document fits within two text types.
Firstly being the procedure text type, as the report focuses on what the student needs to do, and
when and how they need to do it. Secondly the document fits the explanation text type. This is
because the document fully explains each step required, it includes a topic sentence that
identifies what the document is about, and includes supporting sentences that explain how to
write an essay. Throughout the document subjective language is used in the form of second
person address by using the word ‘you’, this helps to form a connection with the audience. Even
though the report uses subjective language, the document does not use informal language at any
stage. The text consists of accurate grammar, correct spelling, serious tone and logical
connections between sentences, which meets all requirements of formal language. The document
also consists of simple, compound and complex sentences, and uses correct punctuation; such as,
commas, colons and semicolons.
