Cardinal Avery Dulles describes six models of the church: 1) The Church as Institution which views the church as a hierarchical organization but lacks strong New Testament support. 2) The Church as Communion which sees the church as an invisible bond between believers based firmly in the New Testament but neglects its visible aspects. 3) The Church as Sacrament which portrays the church as the visible sign of God's presence in the world showing both its invisible and visible realities though requires theological sophistication. 4) The Church as Herald which presents the church as proclaiming the Gospel though an emphasis just on words fails to match the emphasis on sacraments in some Protestant communities.
