Imagine A Pie Chart Stomping On An Infographic Forever By Eronarn May 10th, 2010 http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2010/05/10/imagine-a-pie-chart-stomping-on-an-infographic-forever/ A certain category of design gaffes can be boiled down to violations of audience expectations. Websites that don’t work in Internet Explorer are a heck of a nasty surprise for users who, bless their souls, want the same Internet experience as everyone else. Websites that prevent copying, whether through careless text- as-image conversions or those wretched copyright pop-ups from the turn of the century, cripple a feature that works nearly everywhere else on the Internet. Avoiding this category of blunders is crucial to good design, which is why I am upset that one particular pitfall has been overlooked with extreme frequency. According to statlit.org, statistical literacy is the ability to read and interpret summary statistics in the everyday media: in graphs, tables, statements, surveys and studies. Statistical literacy is needed by data consumers. The importance of statistical literacy in the Internet age is clear, but the concept is not exclusive to designers. I’d like to focus on it because designers must consider it in a way that most people do not have to: statistical literacy is more than learning the laws of statistics; it is about representations that the human mind can understand and remember (source: Psychological Science in the Public Interest). (A) Can you notice what’s wrong with this infographics? You will find a detailed answer below, in the showcase of bad infographics. As a designer, you get to choose those representations. Most of the time this is a positive aspect. Visual representations allow you to quickly summarize a data set or make connections that might be difficult to perceive otherwise. Good data visualization design means going beyond the default charts and designing custom visualizations that reveal the insights and tell stories to your audience. Data visualizations are used in presentations, reports, websites, infographics and more. There are hundreds of ways to visualize data, and once you have chosen an appropriate visualization style for your data, you should customize the design to make sure your audience quickly and easily understands your message. Planning and designing a great infographic or data visualization is just half the battle. Next, you must publish, promote and share your infographics across your key communications channels—including your website, social media, blogs and mainstream media. This session will show you how it’s done by walking through how to optimize your infographics for SEO and social media, create an infographic landing page, execute an outreach strategy to influencers, and give you new ways to track and prove ROI for your infographics.

I gave this talk at a conference for young scientists in New Zealand, "Running Hot": www.runninghot.org.nz. It was a great meeting. My slides are mostly images, so may not make too much sense. Abstract follows: Impressed with the telephone, Arthur Mee predicted in 1898 that if videoconferencing could be developed, ‘earth will be in truth a paradise.’ Since his time, rapid technological change, in particular in telecommunications, has transformed the scientific playing field in ways that while not entirely paradisical, certainly have profound implications for New Zealand scientists. The Internet has abolished distance, as Mee also predicted–a New Zealand scientist can participate as fully in online discussions as anyone else, and their blog can be every bit as influential. Exponential improvements in networks, computing, sensors, and data storage are also profoundly transforming the practice of science in many disciplines. But those seeking to leverage these advances become painfully familiar with the ‘dirty underbelly’ of exponentials: if you don’t constantly innovate, you can fall behind exponentially fast. Such considerations pose big challenges for the individual scientist and for institutions, for researchers and educators, and for research funders. Some of the old ways of researching and educating need to be preserved, others need to be replaced to take advantage of new methods. But what should we preserve? What should we seek to change?
