1. Informa Telecoms & Media NGCN (Next Generation Core Networks) 30th-31st March, London
2. NGCN: A unique focus on the SAE/EPC We are excited to announce details of Informa’s ‘Next Generation Core Networks’ event, which will take place on 30th-31st March, 2011 in London. With the huge growth in smartphones and other emerging devices leveraging new networks and services, the multimedia core network is a critical element in the delivery of next generation broadband services. Building on the huge success of the LTE series by Informa Telecoms and Media, the NGCN will offer a focused and unique insight into the opportunities of the SAE/EPC niche. With the migration to the EPC already starting to take place, the event is timely, allowing for operators to stay ahead of the market and to promote successful EPC planning and output. We are confident that the NGCN will provide a valuable forum for all the key players in the industry to discuss the complexities and opportunities surrounding the migration to a flattened, all-IP architecture for the SAE Core.
9. Why is the SAE/EPC so important right now? Extracted from WHITE PAPER – TRENDS IN PACKET CORE NETWORKS: “The role of the packet data network is increasing in importance as a key enabling technology of both mobile and fixed telecommunications networks. Not only is packet data Internet traffic increasing dramatically, but voice services will also migrate to packet data networks in the medium term as voice over IP, and mobile operators will gradually phase out legacy circuit switched core subsystems, such as GSM and UMTS CS cores”. “A dramatic rise in demand for broadband traffic is being driven by mobile computing, increasingly sophisticated smartphone devices and user desire to access multimedia services on the move. The trend to flat rate fees, along the lines of fixed broadband services, is causing traffic volumes to rise rapidly. Over the next five years, information, entertainment and enterprise data applications will see a strong increase in market share. As a result, mobile operators need to minimise costs and improve delivery mechanisms with packet core solutions for traffic inspection, control and service dependent charging”. Figure 1: Global mobile data revenues vs traffic, percent change 2007 & 2012 “Business benefits of a fully converged core network include reduced complexity and therefore reduced CAPEX and OPEX, reduced time to market for new services and rapid adaptation to changing needs, and new revenue development opportunities from bundling and new service creation”. “The extent to which mobile operators will be able to react cost-effectively to market and business trends and implement the right changes in packet core networks will also determine the success of the mobile operator businesssinthe medium to long term”.
