Defining PC power management

► Actively reducing the energy consumption
of operating PCs and monitors by
                        enabling lower power states during
periods of inactivity — where the PC and
monitor are drawing energy but no useful
work is being performed (e.g., nights,
                        weekends, holidays, and workday
                        breaks).

Pilot PC power management to assess
     financial value and identify risks

“The pitch was simple. Power management would
save money, not adversely affect day-to-day
operations, and could be implemented quickly and
          easily — a no-brainer.”
                                                                            - IT manager, large manufacturer

Key outcomes of your pilot
Piloting PC power management will help IT professionals determine:

      • Scope. Identify PCs and apps that can not be power managed.

      • Impact on IT. Understand the impact of power management on the
network and existing client management practices.

      • Group users by tolerance. Create user groups based on tolerance for
PC power management to serve as the basis for policy creation.

      • Policy development. Tailor your approach (e.g. “scheduled”, “always-
on”, “hybrid”) and frequency (e.g. monitors off after 15 minutes, system
standby after 30 minutes) by user groups.

      • Business case. Estimate the financial savings potential in aggregate
and per PC, along with carbon emissions savings if that’s important.
