CHAPTER ONE
1.0 INTRODUCTION TO THE PROGRAM
1.1 HISTORY OF SIWES
The student industrial work experience scheme (SIWES) was initiated by
the industrial training fund (ITF) in the year 1973. The Program was to update
practical knowledge of students in the universities, polytechnics, and colleges of
technology. It was aimed at bridging the gap between the theoretical knowledge
acquired in the classroom and the technical knowledge in the industries by
providing students with the opportunities to apply their educational knowledge in
real work.
Before the establishment of the scheme, there was a growing concern
among industries that graduates of institutions of higher learning lacks adequate
practical background studies preparatory for employment industries. Thus, the
employers were of the opinion that the theoretical education going on higher
institutions was not responsive to the needs of employers of labour.
The ITF solely founded the scheme in its formative years. But as the
financial involvement became unbearable to the fund, it withdrew from the
scheme in 1978. The federal government handed over the scheme to both
National Universities Commission (NUC) and National Board for Technical
Education (NBTE) in 1979. Later, the federal government in November 1984
reverted the management and implementation of the scheme to ITF and it was
effectively taken over by industrial training fund (ITF) in July 1985 with the
funding being borne by the federal government.

Beneficiaries
The beneficiaries of SIWES include undergraduate student studying either
science or art courses in the tertiary institution. The courses include Engineering,
Agriculture, Technology, Environmental, Science and Education Etc.
Duration
The duration of SIWES for universities is six months while for
polytechnics and college of education is four months.
General Objective of SIWES
It is established to facilitate the full realization and mandatory skills
acquisition and proper training programs designed to expose students to the
industrial workplace environment in their respective disciplines during their
course of study. The students are expected to develop occupational competence
that would facilitate their fitting into the world of work after graduation.
Therefore, SIWES is a key factor required to inject and engender
industrialization and economic development in our nation through the induction
of scientific and technological skills on students.

workshop in Kano state and one of the most reputable in the entire North-
West region of Nigeria.
Ojomash automobile is a duly registered and certified brand in the
automobile industry, whose operations in Nigeria has spanned over two
decades. The organization has trained over 100 mechanics, and by
extension empowering them economically. Ojomash clinic business has
been able to maintain cordial and professional relationship with growing
list of clientele, which Includes; Central Bank Of Nigeria (CBN), MTN
Nigeria, Etisalat Nigeria, C&I Car Leasing, Arm Pensions, Channels TV
and host of others.
Ojomash Automobile clinic is up to date with the latest trends and
technologies in the automotive industries and also dedication to solution
and innovation gives outstanding edge over their competitors.

a. THE CEO/CHAIRMAN
The chief executive officer (CEO) is the highest ranking executive in the
company, and his primary responsibilities includes making major corporate
decisions, managing the overall operations and the resources of the company , and
acting as the main point of communication between the boards of directors and
corporate operations. The CEO has much hand on role in the company, such as
diagnose of some particular car and also attending to some customers in the
workshop.

c. THE DIRECTOR OF SERVICE AND MAINTAINANCE
The service and maintenance managers are the key players in the
workshop. They are responsible for maximizing the efficiency, revenue and
productivity of the service department and achieving the highest levels of
customer satisfaction. The service managers have good diagnosed skills to
identify service requirements and assess the work of the technicians. They also
have good customer service skill to deal with any customer concerns or
complaints. And also when a vehicle is in for repair or service, the servicing
manage must ensure that a member of the team inspects the vehicle to identify
any additional work is required.
d. DIRECTOR OF SPARE PART
The spare part manager serves a vital role in automobile supply stores and
car dealership service centers He understand enough how cars work to determine
how many piece of each inventory item must always be in the store while helping
with customers service when necessary Purchasing parts is an essential duty of
the spare part director. They serve as middlemen between the company and
vendors. And also they negotiate return terms with the vendors, who sometimes
allow the returns of parts from the inventory that are not selling or becomes
obsolete.
e. DIRECTOR OF BODY AND PAINT

The auto body painters prepare vehicles to be painted and apply paints
cots for touch-up repairs or to justify a customer’s desire to change the cars
colour. They make cosmetics repair to the vehicles and repaint them, often after
collisions or accident.
f. TECHNICIANS
Service technicians work on traditional mechanical components, such as
engines, transmissions, and drive belts. However, they are also familiar with a
growing number of electronic systems. Braking, transmission, and steering
systems. Also use many common hand tools, such as sockets and ratchets,
wrenches, and pliers. These tools generally are owned by service technicians.
Automotive service technicians and mechanics typically do the following:
Identify mechanical problems, often by using computerized diagnostic equipment
Test parts and systems to ensure that they are working properly
Follow checklists to ensure that all critical parts are examined
Perform basic care and maintenance, including changing oil, giving tune-ups,
checking fluid levels, and rotating tires
Repair or replace worn parts, such as brake pads and wheel bearings
Disassemble and reassemble parts

Every employee of the Ojomash Automobile Group, including senior
management members, shall deal on behalf of the Company with professionalism,
honesty, integrity as well as high moral and ethical standards. Such conduct shall
be fair and transparent and be perceived to be as such by third parties. Every
employee shall be responsible for the implementation of and compliance with
the Code in his professional environment. Failure to adhere to the Code could
attract the most severe consequences including possible termination of
employment.
a. DRESS AND APPEARANCE
All employees should be suitably attired while they are on company job.
This will vary from job to job and should bear in mind that they should be
suitably attired for the position which they occupy within the Company and
present themselves at least to an acceptable standard in terms of neatness and
tidiness. All Employees are considered representatives of the Company when they
are in their work place, meetings or travelling outside the company for business.
b. PROTECTING COMPANY ASSETS
The assets of the Ojomash automobile clinic should not be misused,
but instead employed solely for the purpose of conducting the business for
which they are duly authorized. These include tangible assets such as
equipment and machinery, systems, facilities, materials, resources as well as

Group, which is not in the public domain and thus constitutes insider

An employee of the Ojomash automobile clinic shall not use or proliferate
information which is not available to the public and which therefore
constitutes insider information for making or giving advice on investment
decisions on the securities of the respective institution on which such insider
information has been obtained.

who is party to a transaction with his Company.
(ii) An employee is in a position to derive a personal benefit or a benefit
to any of his relatives by making or influencing decisions relating to any
transaction.
(iii) Independent judgment of the Company or best interest cannot be
exercised.
The main areas of such actual or potential conflicts of interest would
include the following:
(i) An employee of Ojomash automobile clinic, conducting business on
behalf of his/her Company or being in a position to influence a decision
with regard to his Company's business with a supplier or customer of
whom his relative is a principal officer or representative, resulting in a

3.0 ANALYSIS OF SERVICE AND PRODUCT
3.1 ERGONOMICS
3.1.0 PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED DURING PERIOD OFTRAINING
As ideal as the program is, the real world is not perfect as it seems, so
also the program itself. Some of the problems encountered during my course of
work
1) The problem of attachment
Students find it difficult to secure an appointment from any organization. At times
most students even go to where they never wanted instead of staying at home.
2) Attitude towards IT students
The attitude of some company staffs towards IT students is something that can
never be overemphasized, as some staffs go as far as seeing the IT students as
messengers (errand boys or girls) instead of teaching and inculcating their
professional experience on the students.
3) It is suggested that some form of allowance should be given to the student as form
of encouragement and also to assist their cost of living, basically feeding and
transportation especially in areas of student far from the neighborhood.
4) I was not allowed to test a car after service or repair. And also I was not taking to
outside job which restrict me to the workshop.
3.1.1 HealthSafetyAnd Environmental Management
The Ojomash Automobile Group shall struggle to provide a safe and
healthy working environment and comply, in the conduct of its business affairs,

with all regulations regarding the preservation of the environment of the territory
it operates in. The Ojomash Automobile Group shall be committed to prevent the
wasteful use and dispersal of any natural resources hazardous to the well being of
the community. The follow are the safety measures followed by the company:
a. Always wear safety gear while working in the workshop, safety shoes and
eyeglasses are mandatory for workshops like welding.
b. Malfunctioning machines can occur any time. It could happen during the process
of screw tightening or replacing the motor of the machine. Irrespective of the type
of break down, never try to work on it while the machine is on and running
c. While dealing with vehicles, always ensure that common safety guidelines are
observed. Pull the hand brake, choke the rear wheels, and fit fender covers.
Always jack the vehicle on a hard surface else use spreading blocks for load
spreading
d. Maintain all the service records of machines and equipment. It will not only save
time but also help you to take care of repetitive break downs.
e. All the tools and accessories must be kept back at their relevant places. Placing
them anywhere will lead to chaos and inefficient working.
f. Smoking and drinking should be prohibited in the workshop.
g. The gangway through the workshop must be kept clear. Any grease or oil spillage
must be cleaned on a regular basis.
h. Always take part in mock security drills. Workshops are enclosed structures, at
the time of emergency you may find yourself stuck. Whenever mock security

drills are conducted, participate in them because that is the best way to prepare
you for emergencies.
i. Before commencing any welding operations, make sure that an appropriate fire
extinguisher is readily accessible. All the workers must know how to use fire
extinguishers, although clear instructions are always written on them.
Inflammable materials must always be accompanied with fire extinguishers.
j. One must know the difference between water extinguishers and carbon dioxide
extinguishers and when to use them as well. For electrical fires, water
extinguishers should not be used. Proper training is advised so that no confusion
arises at the time of emergency.

3.2.2 EQUIPMENT,SOFTWARE AND MACHINERYUSE INTHE COMPANY
1. Hydraulic Jack: Hydraulic jack are mechanical device use to apply great force
with a little effort. Although not every car job will require you to lift the car up,
there are many cases where doing so will speed up the process. Hydraulic Jacks
are lifting tools only and are not meant to be used to secure the car up. For that
purpose, make sure to always use jack stands. Good jacks can be a bit pricey so
you may want to use the mechanical jack that comes with your car as a substitute
and maybe ramps.

2. Jack Stand: One of the essential tools needed for auto mechanic work are jack
stands. Once a vehicle is lifted to fit the jack stand on a solid part of the car
underneath it like the chassis, they can be carefully fitted before removing the
jack. The jack stand is use to safely secure a lifted car. Each type of jack stand has
the maximum load it can withstand or carry. For safety purposes jack stand that
can carry at least 2-3 tons of weight are employed.

3. ODB2 Scanner: Want to know why is that "Engine Check" light on?
Troubleshooting gets so much easy with an OBD2 Scanner. Back in the day this
tools did only read codes and they costed a fortune. Luckily for us, in 2017 good
OBD2 scanners can be found at around a hundred dollars with engine and ABS
code read, scan and erase. Some are brand-specific, some are "read only" and
some can do it all, just like the software used at authorized dealerships. We advise
you to do your research when you purchase one of these tools. Cars from 1996
onwards incorporate OBD2.

Extremely useful to check batteries, fuses, work on car audio... an absolute must.
They range from cheap and inexpensive to crazy high expensive. It is advise you
to buy something of decent quality as you will give this tool a LOT of use.

5. Engine cranes: They are equipment use in the workshops to lift heavy loads.
They are mostly use to remove or install gasoline or diesel engine from he vehicle
at repairing process. It uses heavy cantilever structure to hold the ingine in air so
that the technician can carefully connect or disconnect h fragile host on the engine
from the frame of the car. At the end of the boom there is a grab hook where
lifting chains, slings or a load leveler can be attached for lifting purposes. The
engine crane is commonly used in combination with the engine stand so that the
removed engine can be rotated in midair to provide access to underside surfaces
of the engine.

6. Garage Creeper: The garage creeper is an equipment that makes it easy to move
around with little effort while working under vehicles and also help the workman
to look clean when working. It can be handle by every one

BATTERY BOOSTER: Battery booster also known as a jump start is a method
of starting a vehicle with a discharge or dead battery. A temporary connection is
made to the battery if another vehicle, or to some other external power source.
The external supply of electricity recharges the discharge vehicle’s battery and
provides some of the power needed to crank the engine. Once the vehicle has
been started, its normal charging system will recharge, so the auxiliary source can

removed, if the vehicle charging system is functional, normal operation of the
vehicle will restore the charge of the battery
7. Wheel Alignment Machine
Wheel alignment, sometimes referred to as breaking or tracking, is part of
standard automobile maintenance that consists of adjusting the angles of wheels
to the car manufacturer specifications. The purpose of these adjustments is to
reduce tire wear, and to ensure that vehicle travel is straight and true (without
"pulling" to one side). Alignment angles can also be altered beyond the maker's
specifications to obtain a specific handling characteristic. Motorsport and off-road
applications may call for angles to be adjusted well beyond "normal", for a variety
of reasons.

3.2.4 SomeComponentPartof an Engine
The engine of an automobile is consider the most important component of
an automobile, because without this part there will be no movement and the main
function of an automobile is to aid movement from one place to another. An
automobile engine is a power house where a lot of processes occur so as to make
the vehicle move. The following are some part of an engine
1. The engine block: The block is usually made of cast iron although some high
performance engines have aluminum blocks, giving less weight and better heat
dissipation. Inside the engine block contain some other components such as the
piston, connecting rod and the crankshaft. The block engine also houses the
combustion chamber.

2. Piston and Connecting Rod: The piston may have a recessed crown
incorporating the combustion chamber. Or be flat-topped with the combustion
chamber in the head. The piston is attached to the small end of the connecting rod
by a gudgeon pin. The other ends of the connecting rod are attached in turn with
the crankshaft by split plan metal bearing known as big end bearing.

3. The Crank Shaft: This is made of steel end it revolves in housing supports at the
bottom of the engine block, running in split metal bearing held by removable
bearing caps. Bearing, called main bearing support the crankshaft in the crank
case. As the cranks is rotated by the connecting rod.

4. Flywheel: This is a heavy disc made of steel with a number of gear teeth
called the starting ring gear around its disk. It is attached to the end of a
crankshaft. The primary purpose of a flywheel is to reduce speed variation to
some acceptable value determine by its use. The minor purpose of a flywheel is
to provide for a source of energy when the clutch is engage under load. The
flywheel helps to transmit the engine power and to smoothen out the individual
impulse of the piston so that the power flows evenly. The flywheel is fastened to
the rear end of the crankshaft; it is fitted on to a register spigot and bolted to
ensure absolute eccentricity.

5. Cylinder and Piston Rings: If full use is to be made of the force excited by the
burning charge the piston must be a good sliding fit in the cylinder. To ensure that
a good seal is obtained springs piston rings are fitted into grooves in the piston.
Compressor rings at the top of the piston prevent the gases escaping. Sometimes a
single oil control or scraper ring is fitted to regulate the oil supply to the upper
part of the cylinder.

6. Engine Valves: Valves open and close at pre-determine time, which vary with
different design of engine. They control the entry of the mixture and allow the
exhaust gases to escape, the valves used in motor vehicles engines are called
topped or mushroom valves and there are several method of positioning and
operating them.
7. The Camshaft: The camshaft usually has a number of cams machined along its
length: two cams for each cylinder: one to operate the inlet valve, and the other

the exhaust valve. The camshaft rotates in its own bearing and very often has a
skew gear machined at some suitable point to drive the distributor and or the oil
pump.

8. Engine Valves: Valves open and close at pre-determine time, which vary with
different design of engine. They control the entry of the mixture and allow the
exhaust gases to escape, the valves used in motor vehicles. Engines are called
topped or mushroom valves and there are several method of positioning and
operating them.
9. Firing Orders: The firing order together with suitable valve timing is design to
obtain the best engine performance. A firing order of 1-2-3-4 would result in the
gradual winding up of the tensional stress from one end of the crankshaft to the
other, and would lead to crankshaft metal failure at the same time the man folding
of the mixture together with the positioning of the carburetor would be critical
because it could lead to uneven mixture distribution. In order to overcome these
undesirable attributes the firing order is arranged as 1-3-4-2 or 1-2-4-3 for four
cylinder engines and for six cylinders engine it is 1-5-3-6-2-4
3.2.5 HANDLING EQUIPMENT USE

1.0 Oil Filter Wrench: Oil filter wrench are use to change oil filters in a car engine.
Doing an oil change is perhaps one of the simplest, most money-saving operations
we can conduct in our own cars. Oil filters tend to get really stiff and is usually
borderline impossible to remove them by hand.
There are loads of different tools for this purpose although we believe
adjustable zip wrenches as the one on the picture and 3 Jaw wrenches are the most
efficient for the job. Getting at least one oil filter wrench of any kind (just the one
that fits your car better, for instance) is an absolute must.

2.0 Oil Pan: Another essential material for oil changes of any kind (be it engine oil,
transmission oil, gearbox oil...) To perform oil-related operations in a clean and
environmentally friendly way, is using a oil drip pan. They allow you to collect
the used oil and help keeping your garage clean from dangerous oil spills.If you
change your engine's oil following the right oil change interval, you will be

3.0 Hammer: Things get stuck with dirt, grease and rust, and sometimes a good
whack with a hammer is all it takes for that rotor or that ball joint to come off.
Especially when we work in brakes and suspension, things tend to get really hard.
Look for a nice rubber handlebar to ensure good grip. The one in the picture is a
Ball peen hammer. If you work with big vehicles such as industrial vehicles, you
may want to consider getting a Club Hammer too.

4.0 Screw Drivers: As the names imply they are tools use to drive screw. A nice set
of screwdrivers is one of the basics of any well-assorted toolbox. There are shapes
galore although the most common are: Flat, Phillips, Allen and Torx. If faced with
an uncommon kind of screw, you can always check this extensive list and see
what the kind of screwdriver that you need is. Most ratchet sets include a few
different screwdriver heads with the most common shapes and sizes. Consider
getting at least some stubbed ones, great for working in reduced spaces, and some
regular length ones.

SETS OF SCREW DRIVERS
5.0 Braker Bar: A metal pipe attached to a wrench does the same as this and you
don't always need to have a 24 inch long metal tube hanging around your garage,
especially when you only have a small portable toolbox to keep everything
together. It is however a very useful tool as it provides with greater torque,
helping with hard bolts. The longer, the more powerful. Go only for chrome
vanadium alloys on this one.

6.0 Rachets And Socket Sets: These are tools that allow you to work with freedom,
speed and accuracy. One of the best possible investments for your tool box. There

are three different sizes of ratchets: ¼” (small), ⅜” (medium), and ½”
(large). There are sets with all three, two like the one in the picture or just one
size. With sockets of all kinds, or just the basic ones. Some sets come with
ratchets AND wrenches... Try and get yourself at least a big and a small ratchet
set with the basic sockets as those are the ones you'll use the most.

7.0 Wrench: is a tool used to provide grip and mechanical advantage in applying
torques to turn objects, usually rotary fasteners, such as nuts and bolts or keep
them from turning. During maintenance service technicians find it easy to loosen
and tighten bolt & nut without applying more force to the bolt or nut which as a
result can damage it.

3.3.1 ACTIVITY OF QUALITY CONTROL ASSURANCE IN THE
COMPANY
The activities of quality control are undertaken by the manager and some
of the senior staff in the company. It involves testing of the cars after service to
make sure that everything is well in place. It main purpose it’s to ensure that the
best is giving to their customers. The testing might be done by using an
equipment i.e the onboard diagnose 2 (ODB2) or by mainly driving the car
through some distance.
3.4.1 MAINTAINANCE POLICY
This is a method use to maintain the working condition of machinery,
equipment, and tools at the optimum level so as to give maximum output. All tool,
equipment and vehicle must be properly maintained so that workers are not
endangered. Preventive maintenance is the systematic care and protection of tools,
equipment, and machines before use. We must always be aware that maintenance
tax themselves are potentially hazardous and can result to injury

Material procurement is one of the activities of the sales director in the
company, its starts from purchase of goods from the vendors to the final usage of
the goods or parts. The process is used to ensure the buyer receives goods,

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION
CONCLUSION
My three months industrial attachment as a junior technician at Ojomash
was a huge success and a great time of acquisition of knowledge and skills. This is
because I had the opportunity to blend the theoretical knowledge acquired from
school with the practical hands-on application of knowledge gained here to perform
very important tasks that contributed in a way to my productivity in the company.
My training here has given me a broader view to the importance and
relevance of Mechanical Engineers in the immediate society and the world as a
whole, as I now look forward to impacting it positively after graduation. I have also
been able to improve my communication and presentation skills and thereby
developed good relationship with my fellow colleagues at work. I have also been
able to appreciate the connection between my course of study and other disciplines
in producing a successful result.
RECOMMENDATION
I use this means to make the following recommendations concerning the training of
students in Industrial Attachments
i. Allowances should be paid to students during their programme just like NYSC and

not after. This would help them a great deal to handle some financial problems
during their training course.
