The document proposes replacing fossil fuel cars with a Solar Powered Automobile (SPA) system in Kahului, Maui. The SPA system would use solar and wind energy to charge golf cart-sized vehicles. Charging stations equipped with photovoltaic cells and vertical wind turbines would produce and store enough renewable energy each day to power the vehicles. This alternative transportation solution would be unlimited, free of pollution, and cheaper than gasoline-powered cars over the long run. A prototype was created and the plan is to install more charging stations and solar panels around Kahului to transition residents to the solar-wind SPA system.
