This document discusses smart metering systems for microgrids. It describes the smart metering system used in the Aalborg University Intelligent Microgrid Laboratory, which collects data from consumers and distributed energy resources through smart meters and transmits it through both local area networks and the internet. It also discusses a Sino-Danish project that will demonstrate a 200 kW hybrid renewable microgrid in Shanghai using Kamstrup's smart metering and data management platform. Future work will focus on implementing this system at the demonstration site and further developing its capabilities for functions like demand response and integration with microgrid energy management systems.

Introduction
Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) consists of smart meters, data storage and management
and communication systems.
AMI collects information from the end users and measures the energy consumption of the
consumers as well as the generating power of the distributed generation system.
SM provides information and/or alarms about consumption, events, power quality, tampering, etc.

Smart meter collects the measurement data from the consumer and then transmit
the data optically from the meter to a local computer which works as a data
collector.

The data collected by smart meter can be transmitted from the meter to the utility
central collection point by internet lines (TCP/IP).
Smart meter is able to communicate with an IP module connected via a LAN cable
or with GPRS.
Communication – Internet based on TCP/IP
• Two extra IP modules (IP101i),
• A switch/ a router,
• A Zigbee plug-in module,
• An In-home display system.

Potential Benefits
From the consumer’s perspective
• Estimate bills from the collected information and thus manage their energy
consumptions to reduce their electric bills using in-home display .
From the utility’s perspective
• Realize real-time pricing, by which the companies can limit the maximum
electricity consumption and tries to encourage users to reduce their demands
in the periods of peak load.
• System operator can terminate or re-connect electricity supply to any customer
with proper mechanism remotely in order to optimize the power flow or ensure
power quality according to the information sent from the demand sides.
