2. Teams
An overview of the model—from The five dysfunctions of a team
Organizations fail to achieve teamwork because they fall prey to five pitfalls
called the five dysfunctions of a team.
3. Teams
1. First dysfunction is an absence of trust among team members. This stems
from their unwillingness to be vulnerable within the group. If they are not open
about their mistakes and weakness, it makes it impossible to build trust.
2. If there is lack of trust, it leads to dysfunction number 2 of fear of conflict.
When there is no trust, teams are incapable of engaging in a passionate
debate of issues. They only use guarded comments.
4. conflict
3. A lack of healthy conflict is a problem and leads to the third dysfunction of
a team: lack of commitment. Without having voiced their opinions, members
rarely buy into and commit to decisions.
4. Because of lack and commitment and buy-in, members tend to develop
avoidance of accountability.
5. dysfunction
5. Failure of accountability leads to the fifth dysfunction. Inattention to
results, this happens when team members put their individual needs (ego,
career, or recognition), above the goals of the team.
Teamwork deteriorates if even a single dysfunction is allowed to grow.
6. Team
A truly cohesive team behaves in a different way:
Trust one another.
Engage in unfiltered conflict and ideas.
They commit to decisions and plan of action.
They hold each other accountable for delivering results in regards to those plans.
They focus on the achievement of collective results.
