The survey of craftworkers at 3009 Post Oak Boulevard in Houston showed that most traveled to the job site by car, with some using trucks, while a few took public transportation like buses or trains or alternative modes like biking or walking. The various transportation methods used contributed differing amounts of carbon emissions, with vehicles like trucks and SUVs having higher emissions than more efficient options or active transportation. Collecting this data provided insights into the carbon impact of getting workers to the job site.

(MKWG)
Materials Position Statement:
“The AIA recognizes that building materials impact the environment and human
health before, during, and after their use. Knowledge of the lifecycle impacts of
building materials is integral to improving the craft, science, and art of
architecture. The AIA encourages architects to promote transparency in
materials’ contents and in their environmental and human health impacts.”

129. MATERIALS RESEARCH COLLABORATIVE (MRC)
at the
University of Houston College of Architecture and Design
The Materials Research Collaborative (MRC) at the University of Houston College of Architecture serves as a materials
resource for material discovery, innovation, instruction, and research.
Materials Database - http://uh.edu/archmrc/
The MRC has developed a web-based database that catalogs the 600 physical materials in its collection. On going work of the
MRC includes uncovering new and innovative materials, cataloging the physical samples and researching and inputting data
regarding the specific extrinsic and intrinsic properties of these materials. In addition the MRC has a physical collection of
almost 200 material tabulas from Material ConneXion. The MRC is also engaged in specific material research projects funded
by grants, gifts or other sources:

Made in Houston - http://madeinhouston.uhmrc.com
The database lists fabricators by materials with which they work (wood, metal, ceramics, polymers, coatings, and hybrids) +
their specific capabilities (casting, molding, forming, bending, 2D or 3D cutting/CNC, sculpting, carving) in the hope of
connecting local designers with local makers.
Reuse in Houston - http://reuse.uhmrc.com/reuse/
This database lists the local companies and organizations along with the types of services they offer and the building materials
they house. You can find the material/service you require by either utilizing the search box to the right or by selecting the
“Materials” link above.
