3. STAR
Stop, Think, Act and Reflect
All Key Stages at JHNCC use STAR. It
gives both pupils and teachers the
opportunity to find out how much had been
understood and what is needed to make
improvements.
I allow 15 minutes every two-week session
to read and act upon feedback otherwise
marking and teacher assessment is
pointless.
5. Hinge Questions
Usually asked halfway through the lesson to
assess class understanding of the topic to that
point. Depending on the responses, the teacher
can either carry on or adapt the remaining part
of the lesson to ensure all pupils are making
progress.
An example of this was in a Year 10 creative
writing lesson where the objective was to use
sensory language to describe setting and
emotions. The Hinge Question was: How can
your senses help with your creative writing?
If pupils can answer this question I can carry
on with the lesson.
6. Peer and Self Assessment
This is a quick win provided pupils act upon
the feedback given and provided pupils give
constructive feedback.
It usually works on a WWW (What went
well) and EBI (Even better if.)
Self Assessment: Pupils look at the assessment criteria
given and self assess their own work. This makes them
take responsibility for their own learning and progress.
Peer Assessment: Pupils swap their books with another
pupil and they mark based on the assessment criteria
given and take responsibility for their peers learning and
progress.
