Global Sustainability graduate student and co-founder of Beautiful Nation Project Justin Farrow
will once again be participating in the world’s largest crowdfunding event – One Spark. This will
be the third year Beautiful Nation crew will be participating in this Jacksonville-based Global
event.
The One Spark festival is a five day event plus a one day Speaker Summit in downtown
Jacksonville, FL. The festival takes place throughout 20 blocks in downtown Jacksonville, FL from
April 7 – 12 and is free to attend and open to the public. Creators from six categories – Art ,
Education , Health & Science, Music, Social Good and Technology – showcase their projects to
a crowd of over 250,000 people and experience crowdfunding in-person. Beautiful Nation’s
(Creator #22269) booth will be setup along the newly renovated Jacksonville Riverwalk.
Attendees contribute to Creator crowdfunding campaigns and vote to distribute $150,000 of a
guaranteed $350,000 in awards at One Spark. Plus, they can enjoy free live entertainment, a food
village featuring some of the best chefs and food trucks in the region, Creator music stages and an incredible, jam-packed festival atmosphere.
Justin is an MA/Ph.D student at the USF Patel College of Global Sustainability and a web developer and social entrepreneur who focuses primarily on the science
of community building and social media application.
Justin showcases his community building skills with his website Beautiful Nation Project (BNP). BNP is an online education project designed to connect students
with Earth and each other in an effort to promote global citizenship. BNP brings real life and real time sea stories into classrooms around the world, connecting
marine and eco scientists and explorers with educators. The network utilizes social networking and live video conferencing with students to deliver the global
reports of a team of scientist, educators, and explorers traveling the world by boat.
As the “Lighthouse Keeper” of the team, Justin is primary administrator and curator of sea stories and the content gathered from the journey, utilizing it to allow
the world to take part of this virtual tour of the planet in addition to providing custom curriculum for public schools. This past year the BNP sailed more than 10,000
nautical miles, reporting from Bermuda, Turks and Caicos, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Panama and Hawaii. Ideally BNP would like to develop a strategy for
engaging businesses in students’ community service projects and/or the content production.
There is simply nothing like the Beautiful Nation Project in the world. It harnesses the powerful communication tools available today and the natural synergy of
youth to support a platform for global community
service. At the same time, it affords educators the opportunity to continue to learn about our ever-changing world as they teach, giving space for the changes in
perspective that come with new knowledge.
In past years, One Spark has been a place for raising funds for sea voyages and outreach. This year, Beautiful Nation is focusing on public schools in the state of
Florida, most specifically Title I schools in Jacksonville. Justin is hoping to foster enough votes to crowdfund $20,000 from the event that will be used for school
presentations through in-class live conferencing in addition to further development of their Water Quality Testing and Plastic Identification Toolkits for classrooms.
His hashtag for the event will be #ImOnABoat and is voter number is #22269.
