In this lesson we examine the necessity of being rooted in order to bear fruit. We examine the meaning of taking root downward to bring fruit upward. Both slides and audio can be found together at www.cmcoc.org
Sermon by: Brian Birdow
2. Objective of Lesson
• To show the necessity of bearing fruit.
• To show the necessity of being rooted.
3. Background
• Isaiah 11:1-2…Turn with me please…
• Isaiah 27:6 In the days to come Jacob will take root,Israel
will blossom and sprout, And they will fill the whole world
with fruit.
• Isaiah foretells how the kingdom of Judah would be like a
tree cut down to a stump, (He used Assyria as His
instrument) but this remnant would make roots and
branches again and bear fruit. Branch or shoot is a
metaphor for the Messiah.
• Ref. Isaiah 4:2, 53:2, Zechariah 3:8
4. Isaiah 37:30-32
• Then this shall be the sign for you: you will eat this year what
grows of itself, in the second year what springs from the same,
and in the third year sow, reap, plant vineyards and eat their fruit.
• “The surviving remnant of the house of Judah will again take
root downward and bear fruit upward. “For out of Jerusalem
will go forth a remnant and out of Mount Zion survivors. The zeal
of the Lord of hosts will perform this.”
• Hezekiah is provided a sign just like King Ahaz was (Isaiah
7:13). As a result of the sing they have hope of survival form the
Assyrian invasion. Note the reason why God saves them in
Isaiah 37:35.
5. 2 Kings 19:30
• 2 Kings 19:30 The surviving remnant of the
house of Judah will again take root
downward and bear fruit upward. For out
of Jerusalem will go forth a remnant, and
out of Mount Zion survivors. The zeal of the
Lord will perform this.
6. Understanding
Root and Fruit
• The principle is that you have to "make root downward"
before you can "bear fruit upward”.
• When you plant a fruit tree, nothing happens for a long
time that you and I can see with the naked eye.
Underground however the tree is making root!
• The tree or plant must have time to first root downward
before it can grow upward and bear much fruit.
• Matthew 13:3-9 …turn with me please…
7. Practicing
Root and Fruit
• We save before we buy or at least we
should! We study before we test or at
least we should. We read the
instructions before we assemble or at
least we should.
• Luke 14:25-34 …turn with me please…
8. Evil Roots &
Fruitless Blossoms
•Isaiah 5:18-24
•The wicked have
rotten roots, and their
blossoms do not
bring forth a fruit that
God is pleased with.
