Story Bird is a website that allows students to create stories using artwork to generate ideas. Teachers can assign stories and view student submissions. Students can write independently or collaboratively, sharing their stories via social media. The site offers a way for all learners to engage in writing at their own level.
13. Use the pictures to generate ideas for your story, rather than
trying to fit the pictures into a preconceived story.
14. Keep the assignment in mind as you write. Don’t forget to check your
rubric! Do you have a clear beginning, middle and end? Have you
included emotions and dialogue (as your assignment reads)?
15. Email your friend to ask if he or she would like to collaborate with you,
or choose someone from your teacher’s list that is posted on your
assignment page.
16. In the “Explore” mode, Story Bird suggests featured stories. You can search by author,
artist or theme. Teachers can assign stories to read as examples before you start your
assignment, or students can read them for enjoyment and comment on them.
18. Collaborate with a friend from class to write a poem. Your teacher can
set you up with friends to collaborate with from another country!
19. Would you like to write a story for Mother’s Day? You can publish it
and share it with your mother on any social network, or email it to her.
20. Before publishing your story, write a summary and state what age
range your story targets. We see that authors and artists are from all
over the world and write about nearly everything!
21. Differentiate with Story Bird
All students can write for fun at their own level, and all students can
complete teacher assignments at their individual levels.
