Background and Challenge

What is the Recovery School District?
The Recovery School District is a special state school district administered by the Louisiana Department of Education. Created
by legislation passed in 2003, the New Orleans RSD is dedicated to turning underperforming schools into successful schools.

Successful Literacy Programs are Underway and Working
Scholastic® has been heavily involved with school literacy initiatives in the New Orleans RSD schools. With Scholastic’s help,
school libraries have been restocked, teachers have received help reestablishing their classroom libraries and we have initiated
the highly successful Read 180 program across the district. While tremendous progress has been made in the the district, there
is still work to do in helping maintain this positive momentum. This fall we have helped launch the Superintendent’s Reading
Challenge and instituted Read & Rise, a parent involvement campaign to help engage parents and caretakers in their child’s
literacy development at home.

There is Still Work to Be done and We Need Your Help
Many of the schools lack the financial or volunteer support to offer their students and families the opportunity to experience a
Scholastic Book Fair®. Book Fairs are a critical piece of the overall mission to create a literacy rich environment at home to
reinforce what is being taught in school. Studies show kids will read more if they are able to choose the books they want to read
for fun*. It is important to link school literacy gains to the students' home and their family.
*2008 Kids & Family Reading Report
Scholastic Book Fairs is Looking for
                    Caring Organizations to Help

Scholastic Book Fairs®, in partnership with schools around the country, hosts more than
120,000 school reading events each year, reaching over 2 million teachers and more than 35
million children and their families in pre-school through 9th grade. Book Fairs provide
students, teachers, and parents’ access to thousands of affordable books and educational products
and is responsible for putting more than 100 million books in the hands of children every year,
helping to foster enthusiasm for reading, and generating more than $90 million annually in
fundraising for school projects and classroom materials.

As a Scholastic partner in education, your organization will enjoy increased credibility by
associating with the leader in school literacy education. Scholastic Book Fairs is looking for
perfect partnerships that share the same mission of helping schools and kids become lifelong
learners.

It is Scholastic Book Fair’s mission to help all schools inspire
a lifelong love of reading in all children.
The New Orleans Holiday Reading Event Sponsorship

 Partnership Goals:
✤ To provide 10,000 students in the New Orleans RSD elementary and middle schools the opportunity to
choose books they want to read this holiday season.
✤ To Increase parent & guardian involvement by offering a forum to learn how to better engage their
   child’s literacy development at home.
✤ To Improve student achievement by surrounding them with books they are interested in reading.

It only takes a $2500 investment to make sure every student in a
school gets a book this holiday season and a chance to develop a love
for reading that lasts a lifetime.

✤Help Increase Parent Involvement at the “Families Reading Every Day” Workshop:
➡ 30 schools will host a thirty-minute parent workshop prior to the Book Fair. The purpose is to bring parents into the
school where they can learn how to better engage their child in their literacy development and learn how to create and
nurture a literacy rich environment at home.

✤Help Provide Students with a Book Fair Reading Certificate:
➡ The schools will host a Book Fair event in December. $5 Reading Certificates will be distributed to 10,000 New Orleans
RSD students. The certificates will give every child in the district the opportunity to choose books they want to read.
School Sponsorship Investment & Involvement

  beyond your financial investment.
      • $2500 Contribution: Distributed to the school to make sure every child can afford to connect with books they want to
          read.
      • Volunteer Contribution: Sponsoring organizations will have the opportunity to help the school run a successful reading
event by offering to volunteer at the Book Fair, read to the kids and talk about how reading is a critical success factor in
          what you do everyday.
      • Product and Service Support: Organizations can contribute in-kind services to increase participation and raise
          excitement about reading.

will give an additional $1250 in books to the school.
New Orleans Media Awareness Plan
Scholastic has invested in a year-long media campaign to raise the awareness of
our family literacy campaign in New Orleans.

The goal of the awareness campaign is to promote parent / caregiver
involvement in their child’s literacy development at home.

We have secured a partnership with three of the top urban radio stations in the
New Orleans market. These stations will each have a popular on-air personality
act as the campaign champion on their station and on-line.
