Fruits & Vegetables

     Kimberly Noel
  Intended for Grade 2
        Science
Technology Integration
• Rationale:
  - Fruits and vegetables are a necessary part of any
balanced diet. Unfortunately, many people do not
eat enough of these to be the healthiest they can
be. By using technology, students can be
introduced to fruits and vegetables in a way they
have not seen them before. They can learn more
about the nutritional value and benefits of eating
a variety of these foods. (Windows Media)
Technology Integration cont.
-The goal of this lesson is to teach students about
fruits and vegetables from a scientific perspective to
show that they are an excellent source of vitamins
and minerals to keep their bodies healthy.
-As adults many people have not been exposed to
the growing variety of fruits and vegetables that
have become available to them in their local stores.
Technology would also help students to see and
learn about different types of fruits and vegetables
that may not be familiar to them in their homes.
 (Windows Media)
Internet Content
-The internet will allow students to learn much
more about why they need to include these foods in
their diet. They can also talk to experts in the field
of nutrition, watch videos, look at pictures, and go
to educational websites.
-The next three slides will give an example of the
types of content on the internet that are available.

to extend their learning into their home
environment. It also has links to other websites that
would be interesting to students.

               (Click link to visit site)
-This website includes links to videos, information
on food, and keeping track of the food you eat. This
will help answers students questions including how
many, and what kinds of fruits and vegetables they
should be eating.
Internet Resource 3
• http://www.usda.gov/wps/portal/usda/usdahome
                ?navid=PEOPLES_GARDEN
                 (Click link to visit site)
-The People’s Garden works to create gardens in
schools and communities across the country. They
must be collaborative and help the community.
They are in all 50 states and rely on volunteers. The
website also has pictures and a map that can help
  find local gardens.
Kidspiration Diagram

-This diagram
lists some of the
vocabulary
words that the
students will
learn throughout
the unit. This
website can be
used to help in
defining the
words.
Teaching Materials 1
• Farmanac App (Click link to visit site)
-This app can be used to look at multiple fruits and
vegetables. It also tells the student if it is in season
and how to select it in the store.
• Fruit and Vegetable Word Search
  (Click link to visit site)
-This word search can be used at the beginning of
the unit to introduce some basic fruits and
  vegetable names.
Teaching Materials 2
• Fruit and Vegetable Worksheet (Click link to visit site)
-This worksheet will help assess the types of fruits
and vegetables they have been exposed to.
• Healthy Eating Graphic (Click link to visit site)
-This graphic will be given to the students to keep
track at home how well their dinner plate looks like
the graphic. They will then record what they had
and we can discuss in class.
Subject Specific Resource
• Science Net Links
  (www.sciencenetlinks.com)
  -This website has many
  different links to lessons
  and activities that
  incorporate fruits and
  vegetables, as well as good
  nutrition in general.
Uses of the Internet 1
• Interactive Website:

-This website has projects that classes can
participate in. The class would be doing many
different types of learning activities. These would
include learning about how food relates to culture
and health issues that arise from poor diet.
Web 2.0
• USDA on Twitter
-The United States Department of Agriculture is on
Twitter and updates frequently on places that are
“going green” and comments on some problem that
  farms are having.
• Let’s Move Facebook
-The Let’s Move Campaign encourages kids to eat
  right and stay active.

  10. The diagram was created using Kidspiration. How would this diagram/GO be used in an actual lesson? The students would be given this diagram as a handout in the beginning of the unit. I would go over the words with them and tell them that we will be learning about all of the words. Throughout the unit we will refer back to this diagram to review the vocabulary that the students have learned in the lesson. We would go over the words again at the end of the unit and what each one means. 2. How does this visual enhance student understanding of the topic? The visual will enhance the students’ understanding of the topic because it will give them something to refer to during the unit and will become familiar to them as they progress. It will also give them a feeling of accomplishment when they learn a new word on the diagram and can share what it means.
