2. Progetti Verniciatura
rivestimento in vetro e alluminio.
From the time of the giant factories in Detroit, Highland Park and River Rouge designed by Albert Kahn for the North American
car industry, the automobile has undergone
extraordinary development. Its technological
content has transformed its aesthetic qualities and changed its social role. As production
has become more complicated, the plant has
evolved along with the process.
The little town of Maranello possesses the
fascination of the Italian industrial epopea,
recalling those stages of the economic boom
that swept through the country after World
War II and that marked the history of the car
industry and, at the same time, that of a highly sophisticated technological jewel. Despite
any crisis, the red Ferrari shows no signs of
fading and the plant continues to renew itself
thanks to important new initiatives.
The Paint Shop recently inaugurated in
the Maranello plant appears as a great box
twenty-two meters high, rising on a square
lot about one hundred and twenty meters
per side. The composition is governed by
the correlation of a certain number of parallelepipeds which correspond to different
functional zones. The relationship with the
body of the Product Development Center
designed by Massimiliano Fuksas is evident,
as regards both volumes and materials. The
strong presence of the volume is evidenced
by the horizontal-stave pattern of the glassand-aluminum plates in which it is faced.
Aware of the Ferrari fascination, the designer

Particolare attenzione è stata riservata a quest’ultimi. Una balconata, posta a quota + 5,00
lungo il lato est definisce definitivamente il
ruolo degli ospiti, i quali, sfruttando questo
percorso, possono osservare le varie fasi del
processo produttivo senza intralcio e pericolo.
volume vetrato posto nell’angolo sud-ovest.
in alluminio.
tor of Maire Engineering, has played on the
opacity of the facing materials allowing, in
zones of particular interest, a view from the
outside.
The guiding principles behind the project are
the use of renewable sources of energy and
high environmental quality of the interiors.
Surprisingly, this industrial construction appears as architecture designed for man. The
requisites stipulated by European standards,
which for 2007 require, in addition to control
of energy consumption, specific standards
relevant to workplaces where paint is employed, have already been complied with
through the Maranello firm’s general plan
for environmental certification.
The impression conveyed by the pavilion is
that it has been built according to the same
objectives as those of designing an automo-
bile. Just as technical performance, safety
and comfort of the driver are the primary objectives of the car designer, so the Paint Shop
Pavilion is the interpretation of the sophisticated work process, of the requisites and the
safety of the workers and the constant flow
of visitors.
Particular attention has been focused on the
latter. A balcony, placed at a height of + 5.00
meters along the eastern side, definitively
establishes the role of the guests who, utilizing this itinerary, can observe the various
stages of the production process without any
hazard or danger to themselves. In spite of
the hospital nature of the building, a precise
distance is established, as in only appropriate
to precious objects.
The paint shop workers enter the dressing
rooms, from where they go on the shops,
while employees enter the offices through
the glassed-in volume standing at the southwest corner of the building. The latter, which
contains the stairway, is a naturally ventilated bioclimatic system.
On the ground floor the vehicles are prepared
for painting, a process which takes place on
the upper floor flanked by the balcony. On the
second storey is the heavy machinery used
for treating the air.
Each zone of the facade presents specific
characteristics depending on the type of activity carried out there and on the external
exposure. The southern and eastern sides
present horizontally-ground plates of glass,
applied to aluminum panels. This assemblage constitutes a ventilated facade system
which, traversed by light, accentuates its
reflection on the inside. This great translu-

prefabbricate il cui colore chiaro deriva dalla
polvere di travertino aggiunta all’impasto.
Le parti vetrate maggiormente soggette
all’incidenza delle radiazioni solari, come
Verniciatura diventa vetrina: i pezzi esposti,
d’arte.

the western side on the ground floor, the

becomes a showcase: the pieces displayed,
even when not year finished, are already
works of art.
