Make the Most of Teaching the Hudson Valley Online

  1. Hello. My name is Kerri Karvetski and I am a communications consultant working with THV. I’m here to show you how to make the most of Teaching the Hudson Valley online, to answer any questions that you may have about the THV Web site, and to take suggestions.
  2. A few points I’d like to emphasize. First, please share. Sharing your lesson plans helps everyone. Anyone can upload their lesson plan. We’ll take all subjects, grades, learning standards and HV destinations, as long the lesson utilizes a significant site in the Hudson Valley.
  3. Second, Participate. What’s going to make this valuable to all educators is your participation. Comment, rate, post variations, so this resource grows and grows.
  4. Expand search Using multiple criteria restricts your search Keyword, Curriculum Standard, Destination, County, Zip code, grade, subject More search terms, the more restrictive your search Search appears in almost every place, but not on lesson plan upload
  5. Search Results sort by relevance, date entered Snapshot of data relevant the less on plan Show a full fledged lesson plan in a few slides
  6. Same categories as search With the addition of browse all units and browse all lessons Browse all Units
  7. Zoom Blue bubbles have lesson plans
  8. Here’s an expanded bubble destination for Hudson River Maritime Museum and Rondout Lighthouse. With every destination there will be a physical address. (Again if you representing a site, check your map point when the site launches.) Sometime GoogleMaps is wrong. We see here that there are three lesson plans associated with this destination, and there’s links to those lesson plans, so you can go right to them with a click.
  9.   Unit Title Other lessons in this Unit Destination info Overview, Resources, Worksheets and Attachments
  10. Fill out the info and sign up. You’ll get an e-mail requiring you to confirm your membership. We don’t sell or share your info.
  11. Log in has changed to MyTHV First time log in will ask you to upload a photo MyTHV has your authored lessons, your saved lessons, your comments and variations
  12. Edit Profile
  13. Let’s go to the first lesson plan. Here is an example of how a lesson plan looks on our site. You have lots of information right off the bat -- title, unit, grade, Overview, Resources, WorkSheets and Attachments, NYS standards. And here’s the difference with our site, and how it empowers members to contribute. When you are in a lesson plan you have options -- you’ll be able to download it in Word or .pdf, save it to your account, comment, or create a variation of it and upload it. Personalize the site by saving lesson plans to your account. Customize lesson plans through variations. Let people know what you think by posting comments.
  14. Here’s a screen capture of the online template. We’ve broken it down into 7 screens, and you can easily see where you are in the process. You can enter your lesson plan all at once, or go part way and come back later to finish. We realize that lesson plans are long and you might need to time to finesse it. NOT GOING TO GO OVER EACH OF THE STEPS. GOING TO FOCUS ON SOME IMPORTANT ONES. STEP 1 has mandatory fields, these are the things we need in order to index your lesson plan and have it show up in the search. HOVER to get tips STEPS 2-3 ALSO HAVE OPTIONAL FIELDS. LEARN MORE ABOUT THEM IN THE TEMPLATE word doc
  15. We’ve included a help page Word template so you can look at the whole thing all at once, and if you want, prepare offline
  16. STEP 4 (Select a destination, add a new one (which we will verify) or select Other, which is for things like woods, river, etc.
  17. Add as many links as you want.
  18. STEP 6 ATTACHMENTS (up to 30MB, which is plenty for handouts and images, but small for video. WE know that. ALT: upload to a video sharing site like Teacher Tube and attach the link)
  19. Review and submit
  20. What else is here? Grants, Institute, Announcements, Events We will post important info on home page.
  21. SHORT LESSON PLAN ENTRY FORM Let you enter just the basic info and upload or link to a lesson plan You will need to apply for this.
  22. Now, THV has lots of lesson plans. But we KNOW there are loads of lesson plans out there. We’ve built the community for you. Lesson plans, join THV!
  23. Search for us Become a Fan Suggest to Friends Tell us how you Teach the Hudson Valley
  24. On Flickr we’ve created a group that we’d love for you to join. Exploring ways to make better use of this resource, incorporating it into the site and involving members in posting and sharing photos.
  25. Slideshare is a site to share presentations. We’ll be gathering presentations from the Institute, posting them here and embedding them on our site. Another way for you to reach a wider audience and collaborate with others.
