6. Tomb Kasta Kasta hill - the first
excavations - Hill 133
Tomb Kasta or just hill Kasta is called
the circular hill in the area of ancient Am-
phipolis in Macedonia and on the banks of
the river Strymonas, about 900 meters
southeast of the village of Nea Messolakia,
Serres. It is also known as the tomb of
Amphipolis, a name derived from the
Macedonian graveyard of the early Hellen-
istic period, discovered inside the hill. In
the mid-1950s and up to the 1970s excava-
tions were made on the surface of the tu-
mulus by the archaeologist Dimitris Laz-
aridis, who discovered a set of simple
tombs dating back to the Iron Age.
Excavations in the Tomb
The first excavations on hill Kasta were
made in 1964, when the tumulus was dis-
covered. The excavations continued after
1971 but focused on the top of the hill.
In 2012 the enclosure of the Kasta Tomb
was excavated and was found to be 497
meters in length and 3 meters high, made
of about 2,500 cubic meters of marble
from Thassos. Head of the excavation
was Katerina Peristeri, the director of
the KH 'Ephorate of Classical and Prehis-
toric Antiquities.
In October of 2014, a floor mosaic was
found in the second chamber the rapture
of Persephone by Pluto. The subject is
known from Greek mythology and has
been represented in at least two cases in
a Macedonian tomb.

Kasta hill was a well-known area in
which burial monuments of Amphipolis
were located. Archaeologist Dimitris
Lazaridis made a significant number of
publications for findings in the second
half of the 20th century. He had started
the excavations in the area in 1954, while
the first excavations on the Kasta Tomb
were made in 1964, when he revealed 41
meters of its perimeter.
