Want is an app for people who
want to save and share products.
Want allows users to save product details,
organize products into lists, and share lists
with friends. Unlike the Amazon App, Want
allows you to save any product ever, whether
it’s available in store or online.
3. The Challenge
Create a simple mobile app to make it fast and easy for
people to save products to their phone while in stores.
The Process
After conducting user interviews with six people who
often shop in stores and online, I discovered the core
problems a user deals with when trying trying to
remember a product while in a store. From this research,
I created personas, scenarios, and developed a list of all
the necessary functionality for the app.

5. Background
Olivia is an studio assistant at an art gallery in Chelsea. She
was born in London, and moved to New York City after her 19th
birthday. She currently lives in Brooklyn, where she frequently
shops at small boutiques, thrift stores, and flea markets. She
loves to find unique and one of a kind products. When
shopping, Olivia usually takes the boutique’s card or a
photograph in order to remember product for later.

a good vintage store.”

She often loses the retailers business card very quickly and
she has over 600 photos in her photo stream so she rarely
goes back in order to find a specific photograph. She is
frustrated by being unable to remember where the store was
and what it was called.
“It’s somewhere in Soho, but I don’t know where.”
Goals
Olivia wants to easily remember the items that she would like to
purchase and the location of the stores where she found them.
6. Background
Noah was born and raised in a small town in New Jersey. He
recently moved to New York to pursue a career in Software
Engineering, but he often visits home and maintains close
relationships with his entire family. Noah loves to browse online
and in stores for products for himself and his family members.
He makes notes in his phone about things that he wants and
great gift ideas for people in his life.
Frustrations
Noah’s family often gives him gifts that he doesn’t want and will
never use. Noah is also frustrated when he forgets great gift
ideas that he had for his family.

Goals
Noah wants his family to get him things he will use and he wants
to remember his own gift ideas for them.
7. Background
Zoey is a kindergarten teacher that lives and teaches in
Sunnyside, Queens. She spends a lot of time reading and
thinking about a purchase before she makes it. Her purchases
are usually months in the making, she reads articles and
reviews and then she thinks about the information for a while
before making a decision.
Frustrations
Zoey likes to save products for a long period of time, but often
when she does decide to buy the product she is unable to find
it again.

Age: 30
“If I still want it after three
months, then I’ll get it.”

Goals
Zoey wants to be able to think about a purchase and not be
concerned about whether she will be able to find the product
information later.
9. After creating personas, I created user scenarios in which
the Want app helped them to meet their goals. The scenarios
helped me to established the following user journeys.

Adding friends
Core Product Experience
Adding products
Creating lists
Sharing lists
Viewing friend’s lists
Opportunities Identified
Users needed to be able to add and organize products while they
are on the go.

11. First Iteration
Method
I created a paper prototype in order to tested a fixed
navigation menu and key features with users.
Findings
Users confused icons for different actions.
Users were able to move relatively quickly through
tasks once they were past the navigation menu.
Opportunities Identified
The navigation relied heavily upon icons that were not
clear to users.
