Discussion: How does music affect emotion?
9. How does music affect emotions?
Music is one of the most important techniques used
to encourage viewers to have an emotional
response. Music can be added to make something
look more playful, more suspenseful, more dramatic
and spectacular, and more fearful. Lots of times
when we are watching, we do not notice the impact
that music can have.
10. WALT involve and engage the audience
Getting and keeping viewers attention is one of the
classic concerns of all media makers.
Often: Movement, Action, Violence, Children and
Humour can be highly effective.

11. Music - Activity
Divide the class into two groups. Ask group 1 to put their heads down on their desks
and close their eyes (They are not to see the first part of Segment 5). Now play the
first part of Segment 5 for group 2, which shows the chimps playing with no
background sound. Ask students in group 2 to write a sentence or two on their
feelings after watching this segment.
After students have completed this activity, ask group 2 to put their heads down and
invite group 1 to listen to the next sequence, a clip of music only (no video). Ask
students in group 1 to write a sentence or two on their feelings after listening.
As a whole class, watch the third segment, which combines the images and music
together. Invite students to read aloud their original interpretations and compare
and contrast them with their feelings after watching the video-music
combination. What did they notice about how music changed their interpretation of
the image? What did they notice about how the image changed their interpretation
of the music?

alters their interpretation of the images.

15. WAL what a storyboard is:
When a director is making a film, they plan out the
story in picture form. It looks a bit like a comic strip.
This is called a storyboard.
A storyboard is a series of pictures and words that
help the director to visualise the film. It also helps
to guide the filming schedule. Each picture is
drawn in a frame.
16. Storyboarding:
This is an important part of the documentary

script.
See storyboarding lesson plan.
