2. What are the technical qualities of your work?
I think throughout this project I have developed many qualities when designing and creating the products. I think that
my work has technical qualities which have been improved and developed throughout the project. Firstly I think
that the layout of my products is a strong point. When making my products it was important that I focused on
where each feature was going to go on the design. For most of my products including the posters and can
designs I had the name of the can at the top of the product this is so that it is noticed. I also made sure that the
main focus to the product was the image of the can. For example on the right is one of my posters. I have the
main title at the top and I also have the image of the can in the middle of the poster. This is because this is where
the audience are going to look first. I have also made sure that the slogan on my products is in a suitable space
and is the suitable size so that can also be seen straight away. I have also included a stroke and a drop shadow
on some of my fonts on my products. I think this is a strong technical quality to my products because it allows
the font to stand out more and I think that it emphasises the words and will catch attention from the audience.
When applying the stroke to my copy I have used a colour which contrasts with the background. This is so that it
stands out more against the background. For my designs I decided to use different tools in Photoshop to give
different effects for my images. For example for my website banner I wanted to include a coloured image
however the image which I choose was in black and white. To make my design coloured I firstly used the magic
tool to select a section from the image I then clicked layer via copy and created a new layer from the original
image after creating all my sections I then decided to add colours which will be suitable for my design. After all
my layers were complete and coloured I then merged the layers so that they became all one layer. After this I
then decided to add a drop shadow on the image. By adding a drop shadow it gives a 3d look to the design and it
makes the design seem much more real. Another tool which I used when making an image for the website
banner was the rotascoping tool. I decided to use this took because I think that it made my image more clearer
and I also decided to use it so that I could change some of the colours of the image so that it fitted in with my
theme. I firstly started of by rotascoping the outline of the image. I then created it into a new layer and I then
changed the colour of the section. By doing this I think that it gave my overall final image a much more stronger
look. I also think that it made it more suitable for my theme of Irn-Bru. As I changed the colour of the top, shorts
and shoes to represent Irn-Bru I think that this gave my final product a consistent theme. To make my can
designs I firstly found a template of a can which I used I then found an image of a plain can. After I finished my
design I selected different sections from the template I then pasted these sections on the can. After this I
selected multiply on Photoshop. This then gave a metallic affect on the can and looked like my design had been
printed out on the can. I completed my can sets by doing this for the font, side and back of the cans.

3. What are the aesthetic qualities of your work?
On all of my products I have used different techniques to develop the aesthetic qualities of my
work. One of the aesthetic qualities which I have considered throughout my work is my use of
colours. As I decided when I was planning my products that I wanted to keep the original IrnBru colours I decided to keep with the consistent theme of orange, blue and white. This is so
that the audience for the drink will recognise the colours and recognise the drink. An example
of when I have kept the theme running throughout is on my can design. I have decided to an
orange and blue background and white text as this will contrast each other and straight away
the audience will be able to recognise the drink brand. Another technical aspect to my design
which is I think is quite strong is the fonts which I have chosen. On all of my products I have
used the same font which I have used on the can this is called Press Feeling. I have decided to
use this font because I think it is bold and I think it fits in well with my theme. On some of my
developments the font is slightly different because I wanted to experiment with the different
fonts to see which was the most successful, however they are all similar as I wanted a
consistent theme running throughout my product. Another aesthetic quality which I have
included in my design is the images chosen. Within my developments I have decided to use a
range of different images ranging from sport vectors and to athletes. Using these different
images I have tried to give out an impression to the audience that people who play sport and
athletes drink the drink as it provides them with energy. For example I think that my image
used for the website banner is quite a strong image. It is interesting to look at and I think its
brings a meaningful message across to the audience. I also think that this image is
aesthetically pleasing as the colours which are on the image are also the main colours of the
theme which are orange, blue and white. By linking the image with a slogan it tells the story
of the image. As there is an image of trainers getting ready to run a race I have decided to use
the slogan ‘a more powerful you’. This is clear to the audience that it is an energy drink as I
think it only needs the image and the slogan to explain the message. I have decided to have a
consistent theme running throughout my products I have decided to do this so that it is clear
that they are all part of a set.

4. Are there opportunities for further development of your work?
Throughout the project I have developed and improved my ideas of my designs I firstly started off
with a basic idea however I then developed it using my own suggestions. After each design I
came up with a new idea and tips on how I could improve the next design. I came up with
different ideas and new themes which I experimented and tested out until I came to a
conclusion of my favorite design and the design which I think is most suitable. Overall I
think that I could take on further development in some areas of my work. For example for
my can I think that I could try a new theme. I think this would benefit me into trying out
new things and also benefit me into exploring and learning new skills within Photoshop. I
would like to try and develop my cans to try something different because I think I have
stuck to ideas which are quite basic. I think it would be a good idea to create a range of
special edition cans. Where they are different colours and they have celebrities on the front
of the can. Each colour is a different celebrity. I think this would be a good idea if I used
athletes as the celebrity as I think the audience would feel influenced by the athlete when
they see the drink. I also think I could further develop my work by coming up with different
colours such as adding a yellow colour. I also think I could experiment with a range of
different fonts such as a different sans serif font. Another aspect which I think I could
improve on my designs is the web banner. I think that I could create more web banners of
different sizes by doing this I think that it would give me a range of different options to
choose from. I also think that I could include my web banners by include a moving graphic
as this would make the design look much more interesting and attention grabbing to look
at. To improve my web banners I think I could have a changing background which changed
from orange to blue and which flashed with the can. By having this idea it would bring a lot
of notice to the web banner as it will stand out. I also think that I could improve my
magazine advertisement by including a range of different sports and include a range of
different athletes. I think that I could also include my products by basing the theme more
on Scotland. As the drink is very popular in Scotland I think that using athletes that are
Scottish on my designs would increase the popularity of the drink. On some of my web
banners and magazine advertisements I have not included an image of the can which think
should be added to show an example of what the can looks like.

5. Are my final pieces fit for purpose?
Overall I think that my final chosen products are fit for purpose. This is because I have
started off with a basic idea however I have then improved and made it more suitable
for the audience and made it more appealing for the purpose of the products. The
main purpose for my final products is to advertise to the audience a new energy drink
called Irn-Bru 32 through a magazine advert, website banner and the can by using
sophisticated techniques to successfully advertise to audience. I have used a range of
features which make my product fit for purpose these include using appropriate
colours, fonts, copy, images and slogans. By researching and developing my ideas I
think that my final pieces are appropriate for the purpose. To the right side I have
decided to compare my final designs with current advertising products on the market.
By doing this I am able to see the similarities and differences to my product and other
advertising examples for current products. Firstly I am comparing my magazine
advertisement poster with a red bull advert. There are a few similarities within these
posters first of all both of the posters include some sort of activity which involves
energy. By showing this to the audience they will get the impression that drinking the
energy drink gives you the energy to take on these activities. Another similarity is that
they both have the images of the energy drink cans however the difference between
my advertisement and the red bulls advertisement is that I have included a slogan and
the name of the energy drink. I have decided to include this so it is clear to the
audience what it is. Below my advertisements I have decided to include a comparison
image of my Irn-Bru can and also a monster energy can to compare the features. The
similarities on the cans is that they include contrasting colours as this will draw
attention to the can. Another similarity is that the name of the cans are in a large font
so that they can be seen straight away. A difference between the cans is that I haven't
include a logo but instead I have enlarged the title so that is in the middle of the can.
However monster energy can has the logo which is recognized by the audience.
Underneath is also my example a website banner and the monster energy website
banner. The main similarities to these banner is that the name of the energy can is in
the center of the banner which shows that the layout is very similar. The main
difference is that I have also included more features such as a slogan and the sport
images.

6. What areas of your development worked well?
Original design
I think that each part of my development helped me to improve my knowledge and skill
of my designs. I think that one of the most successful areas of development was in my
can designs. I firstly had an idea which I wanted to do a variation of however I then took
it as far as I could and I decided to redesign my can by changing the font, layout, and
copy. By gradually developing and changing aspects to my can design I managed to
create a brand new design which suited my target audience and also looked more
interesting and attention grabbing. By changing the font and taking away the features I
think that it created a more professional and sophisticated look of my energy drink can. I
also think that it is much more clearer and bolder compared to my original design. By
looking at my original design and my final chosen development I can see the stages of
develop and how it has been improved. I think I have improved by improving the use of
the colour on my design, I also think that I have improved by choosing a different font
which is much more clearer to see from a distance. I have also created a much more
stronger layout as each feature can be seen and read clearly. Another area of my
development which I think worked well was my magazine advertisement design. I firstly
came up with a basic idea for my can design which was very boring, and didn't have
much features, my first design also had quite a lot of negative space. I then decided to
stick with the sport theme however just develop and improve it by adding other features
such as a morepowerful image. Through developing my magazine advertisement my
knowledge and my skills have expanded as I improved on my creative skills and also
improved my technical skills within using Photoshop. As my original design was quite
basic I then moved onto something more technical and creative by using a image
however then Rota scoping the athlete as this made them stand out. I also decided to cut
the amount of text that was on my design because it wasn’t needed and instead of
having encouraging words I decided to add a slogan which said ‘Athletes drink it so
should you’. By having this slogan I think that my audience will remember it as it is very
catchy and it rhymes with the title which is a good method to use so that my audience
remember the energy drink and will be more interested to buy it.

7. What areas of planning and development could be improved?
Overall I think that the planning and development stages of this project helped me improve my work
however I think that there could be some areas of the planning and development which I could
improve upon to improve my final product. For example when I was developing my can. I think
that my ideas was all very similar. I decided to pick a theme and create different variations of
this theme. Although that this method allowed me to develop my ideas it didn’t allow me to
explore new themes as I had a similar theme throughout my can. I think that if I created new
designs for the cans and then selected the best I think that this would allow me to experiment
with different techniques. Another area of development which I think I could improve would be
the colours which I used. Throughout my design I chose to stick with the colours blue, orange
and white however on my last can design I decided to add a different colour which was red. I
feel that throughout my designs I could’ve experimented with a different colour such as a
yellow, silver, gold or a green to see what this would look like on the design. I also think that on
my can, magazine and banner products I could’ve created a new development with a different
font. As I used a similar font throughout my products I think that I could’ve tested out a more
interesting font such as ‘pulse’. Another point which I think I could’ve improved throughout
making my products was keeping a consistent theme throughout my products. Although that I
made sure the magazine advertisement and my website banner had the same theme I think that
I could’ve developed my can so that it was clear that they was all part of a set. I think that I could
do this by adding an athlete on the front of the can as this would be clear and would allow the
audience to recognize it. When I first started planning my design I had a basic idea of what copy
which I wanted to use. I decided to come up with a range of different slogans which I could pick
from. From my copy experiment I also decided to think about what other copy I would like to
include on my designs. I decided to also include a description of what the energy drink was. By
creating this description I was able to use it on my products however when I applied the
description of the drink onto my products I found that it was too long. I think that I could’ve
improved this by making more examples of the description as this would allow me to test which
one was appropriate for the product.

8. What effect do you think your development stages had on the final product?

I think that using the developing stages during production has had a positive effect on the final
outcome on all of my products. By developing and improving each step of my production I think
it has helped me by increasing my knowledge of features and has also allowed me to
experiment with new techniques and different ideas. An example of when the development has
had a positive outcome on my work is the production of the magazine advertisement. I firstly
started off with a basic design including 3 silhouettes of a man I also included the large title and
examples of the energy can. I think that my first development was very basic and quite boring
to look at. I decided that I wanted to develop the sport theme and create a new design.
Through my developments I gradually improved on small things and experimented with
different techniques till I decided on my final development of my magazine advertisement. On
my final development I have included a background, a slogan, I have also included rotascoping
and I have developed from a portrait layout to a landscape layout. By using different stages it is
clear that the quality of my work has improved as I can see the development has improved.
Another product which the development stages have had a good effect on the design is my
website banner. I firstly started off with a very small website banner which carried the same
theme as my 1st development the website banner is very simple and only includes slogan, name
of the can, and some images of men doing sport. Throughout my development I decided to try
something different. I decided that I should increase the size of my website banner so I was
able to include more features. I decided to change it to portrait and I also decided to use the
techniques which I learnt from my final development of my poster such as rotascoping. I also
developed an idea of creating a GIF file however I would need to do this as a further
development. Although that my development did allow me to experiment with different things
a negative aspect to my development is that I used the same idea however just did a variation
of the theme. This limited me into trying new things however..
