3. Transportation Advances
A significant and one of the most relevant elements in the
tourism equation is in terms of transportation. This essential
factor has passed through many stages .The advancement
of transportation has made the world smaller and all the
countries linked together. The advances of transportation
was started when people shifted to horses from man’s feet,
stagecoaches, water transport, railroad, automobile, and
motorcoach transport and finally air transport. A brief
account of the transport development can be described as
follows:
5. 1. Stagecoach Travel
During 15th century stagecoaches were introduced in
Hungary and used to provide regular service on laid
down routes. Horses were attached to a small wooden
cabinet. However, stagecoach travel had turned out to
be quiete in favour in other regions of globe especially
in Great Britain.
6. 2. Water Travel
The Duke of Bridgewater is believed to be the initiator
of water transport service between Manchestor and
London Bridge in 1772.
Each boat contained a coffee room for sale of
refreshments by the captain’s wife.
By 1815 steam boats emerged. In 1833 the first
advertisement for steamboat excursion trip appeared.
7. 3. Rail Travel
Originally, railways were introduced in 1825 in England,
but were put into practice for public in 1830. The first
route of railway was from Liverpool to Manchestor. It
costed only one penny per mile for per passenger
which was very relevant and it helped in increasing the
demand of railway.
8. 4. Automobile and
Motorcoach Travel
Automobile and motorcoach travel was introduced in
mid of 19th century and beginning of 20th century.
Henry Ford launched his much publicized Model T in
1908.
An network of roads became ready for use by 1920
that led to the automobile present day dominance of
the travel industry.
Motorcoaches too came to be practised shortly.
9. 5. Air Travel
The Wright brothers were the first to introduce the first
successful air travel to the world in 1903.
The first United States transcontinental jet flight was
operated by American Airlines on 25 January,1959
from Los Angeles to New York City.
India got its first carrier by Ratan Tata in 1911
1958,Jet Airways started connecting flights.
