Flow production involves moving items continuously through the production process from one stage to the next without interruption. This allows for mass production of similar items at high volumes. Coca-Cola uses continuous flow production in its bottling process, where bottles move overhead from cleaning to filling to capping on an automated production line. The process involves cleaning and sanitizing bottles, filling them with water, sugar syrup, flavoring and carbonation using multiple steps, and capping the finished bottles for packaging. Continuous flow is well-suited to Coca-Cola's large production needs to meet worldwide demand for its various drink products.
2. WHAT IS FLOW PRODUCTION ?
• Flow production involves a continuous movement of
items through the production process. This means that
when one task is finished the next task must start
immediately. Therefore, the time taken on each task
must be the same.
• Flow production (often known as mass production)
involves the use of production lines such as in a car
manufacturer where doors, engines, bonnets and
wheels are added to a chassis as it moves along the
assembly line. It is appropriate when firms are looking
to produce a high volume of similar items. Some of
the big brand names that have consistently high
demand are most suitable for this type of production.
3. COCA-COLA
• Coca Cola as a bottling company uses the
continuous flow method of manufacturing. As
we know, continuous flow may be defined as
the so called process industries which refer to
manufacturing goods such as beer, paper, oil,
and electricity, where in this case it would be a
soft drink company. Here, the products are
made in a continuous fashion and tend to be
highly standardized and automated with very
high volumes of production. The production
flow of Coca Cola involves passing sub-
assemblies/parts from one stage of production
to another in a regular flow. Each stage adds to
the products, this is typical among bottling
plants. Coke uses this method because the
products being distributed by the company are
in wide variation and is sold in bulk amounts.
Products being distributed range from the
bottled goods such as Coke, Diet Coke, an
assorted amount of different flavors .Given that
Coca Cola has such a large range of production,
continuous flow is the best way to produce the
products.
4. PRODUCTION PROCESS OF COKE
• First off, the Cokes are taken to the cleaning unit. Here,
the bottles get cleaned, steamed and sanitized to rid
them of any dirt and debris. This is done by jet streams
and water. Then, the bottles are picked up by something
that can only be described as an overhead conveyer
belt. It's not a traditional conveyer belt, though.
Individual clamps pick up a bottle, and they are
transported from station to station above the room.
• It is time for the Coke to be put into the bottles.
• The soda is not all put in at the same time. The mixing
process actually has more steps now than it did when it
was first bottled. Before, the syrup would go in first, and
the carbonated water would go on top.
• Now, in a room full of bags of sugar and buckets of
caramel coloring, Coke is bottled using four different
steps. First, pure water is put in the bottle by a machine,
after that, refined sugar is added to the mix.
• Then, the sugar water gets the Coke's secret formula
mixture and some caramel coloring. A machines shake
the bottles up a bit to make sure everything is mixed
together well.
• After everything is mixed together, carbon dioxide is
added to the mix to make the drink fizz. After all, who
wants a flat bottle of Coke? The machines then sent the
bottle down another conveyer. In any Coke bottling
plant, this would be the point where drinks would be
checked by a person for quality, but since this was an
exhibit, this step was not shown to visitors.
• The eight-ounce glass bottles of Cokes come off the
conveyer belt, and they are available for visitors to take
home.
5. HOW IS IT IMPLEMENTED
• TOTAL CAPITAL
INTENSIVE(ONE TIME
INVESTMENT)
• MASS PRODUCTION
• REDUCE TIME WASTAGE
6. ADVT. OF FLOW PRODUCTION
• Advantages
• – Goods are produced in bulk
• – Goods are produced cheaply
• – Time is saved
8. CONCLUSION
SUCH PRODUCTION PROCESS ARE USED BY BIG
AND REPUTATED COMPANIES WHICH NEED TO
PRODUCE IN BULK, TAKING AN EXAMPLE OF
ALL THE SOFT DRINK COMPANIES.
PRODUCTON IN BULK IS REQUIRED AS THEY
NEED TO BALANCE THE DEMAND TOWARDS THE
PRODUCT
