2. The first international Women’s day was on
March 11, 1911
• This was a day to bring attention to the situation of women in the
workplace.
• Women were paid much less than men for doing the same work
• Attempts to form unions were summarily stopped
3. International Women’s Day was moved to
March 8 in 1913
• This was done to commemorate female garment workers in 1857
who were protesting over low pay and dangerous working
conditions
• The police quickly broke up the protest
• However, this laid the foundation for the formation of a female
garment workers union several years later which worked for higher
wages and safer working conditions
4. In 1986, the month of March was proclaimed
to be National Women’s Month
• This month is marked by community events intended to increase
women’s issues and women’s role in history
5. What are the major issues
• The same problems that have not been solved since the 1800s.
• Women make 30% less than men
• And there is harassment and discrimination in the workplace
