Double object pronouns
- Double Object Pronouns
- • To understand how to use double object pronouns, you MUST understand the difference between Direct Object Pronouns (DOPs) and Indirect Object Pronouns (IOPs)
- Direct Object Pronouns • A direct object receives the acBon occurring in a sentence • The direct object can be idenBfied by asking “who?” or “what?” • Mike hit the ball. – Mike hit what? = the ball • The students understand the teacher. – The students understand who? = the teacher
- me nos • Direct objects can refer to people and te things lo/la los/las Yo lo veo. I see it. (lo = el libro) I see him. (lo = Miguel) Yo la veo. I see it. (la = la biblioteca) I see her. (la = María)
- Direct Object Pronouns • ¿Comprendes el libro de español? – Sí, lo comprendo. – Do you understand the Spanish book? – Yes, I understand it.
- Direct Object Pronouns • ¿Tienes la tarea? – Sí, la tengo. – Do you have the homework? – Yes, I have it.
- Direct Object Pronouns • ¿Llamas a tu madre cada día? – Sí, la llamo cada día. – Do you call your mom each day? – Yes, I call her each day.
- Direct Object Pronouns • ¿Ven ellos la televisión? – Sí, ellos la ven. – Do they watch TV? – Yes, they watch it.
- Direct Object Pronouns • ¿Vas a necesitar las maletas? – Sí, las voy a necesitar. – Sí, voy a necesitarlas. – Are you going to need the suitcases? – Yes, I am going to need them.
- Indirect Object Pronouns • The direct object can be idenBfied by asking “to whom?” or “for whom?” • He is giving the book to Maria. – TO WHOM is he giving the book? = to Maria • My mom writes me every week. – TO WHOM does my mom write? = to me
- me nos • Indirect objects can refer to people te le le Te compré un regalo. I bought you a giY. Ella me dice la verdad. She tells me the truth.
- Indirect Object Pronouns • I tell them many lies. – To whom do you tell lies? = to them (les) – Les digo muchas menBras.
- Indirect Object Pronouns • Juan gives me money. – To whom does Juan give money? = to me (me) – Juan me da dinero.
- Indirect Object Pronouns • The teacher helps us. – To whom does the teacher help? = us (nos) – El profesor nos ayuda.
- • When you have both an indirect object pronoun and a direct object pronoun, remember the following: – Indirect BEFORE direct
- He gives me flowers. • DOP = He gives what? = flowers (las) • IOP = To whom does he give flowers? = to me (me) • Él me da flores. = He gives me flowers. • Él me las da. = He gives them (flowers) to me. IOP DOP
- She sells you the book. • DOP = She sells what? = the book (lo) • IOP = To whom does she sell the book? = to you (te) • Ella te vende el libro. = She sells you the book. • Ella te lo vende. = She sells it (the book) to you. IOP DOP
- You explain Spanish to us. • DOP = You explain what? = Spanish (lo) • IOP = To whom do you explain Spanish? = to us (nos) • Tú nos explicas español. = You explain Spanish to us. • Tú nos lo explicas. = You explain it (Spanish) to us. IOP DOP
- Also, remember… • You cannot “LE LO” • When you have le/les with lo/la/los/las, you must change the le/les to SE le lo = se lo le la = se la le los = se los le las = se las les lo = se lo les la = se la les los = se los les las = se las
- Mario nunca se las compra. • Mario never buys them for her. • DOP: Them = flores (las) • IOP: for her = (le se)
- • You can clarify with IOPs to help understand the sentence. • Ella se lo dijo a él. = She told it to him. • Nosotros se lo explicamos a ellos. = We explained it to them.
- You should explain it to me. • Debes explicármela. • Me la debes explicar. • You explain what? = la película (la) • To whom? = to me (me)
- You tell them to her. • Tú se las dices a ella. • Tell what? = menBras (las) • To whom? = her (le se)
- I wrote them to him. • Yo se las escribí a él. • Wrote what? = cartas (las) • To whom? = to him (le se)
- • When you use object pronouns with commands, the pronouns are agached to the command to make one word. • Tell it (masc) to me. Dímelo. • Buy them (fem) for her. Compráselas. • Explain it (fem) to us. Explicánosla.
- One last thing… • If you decide to add object pronouns to the infiniBve (if one is available) or to a command, an accent mark needs to be placed on the 3rd to last syllable. • Debes dármelo. • Necesitas comprárselas. • ¿Puedes decírmela?

- 6. I buy them (masc) for you. – Yo _____ ______ compro. 7. We sing it (masc) to her. – Nosotros ______ ______ cantamos. 8. You cook them (fem) for them. – Tú ______ _______ cocinas. 9. I should bring it (masc) to them. – Yo debo traér___________. or Yo _____ ______ debo traer. 10. We have to sell them (masc) to you. – Tenemos que vendér________. or _____ ______ tenemos que vender.
- 6. I buy them (masc) for you. – Yo te los compro. 7. We sing it (masc) to her. – Nosotros se lo cantamos. 8. You cook them (fem) for them. – Tú se las cocinas. 9. I should bring it (masc) to them. – Yo debo traérselo. or Yo se lo debo traer. 10. We have to sell them (masc) to you. – Tenemos que vendértelos. or Te los tenemos que vender.
- 11. You should tell me it (fem). – Debes decír_______ . or ____ ______ debes decir. 12. Can you explain it (masc) to us? – ¿Puedes explicár_______ . or ¿____ _____ puedes explicar? 13. We write them (fem) to Pedro. – ____ _____ escribimos a Pedro. 14. Bring it (masc) to us. – Traé________. 15. Buy them (masc) for me. – Comprá_________ .
- 11. You should tell me it (fem). – Debes decírmela . or Me la debes decir. 12. Can you explain it (masc) to us? – ¿Puedes explicárnoslo . or ¿Nos lo puedes explicar? 13. We write them (fem) to Pedro. – Se las escribimos a Pedro. 14. Bring it (masc) to us. – Traénoslo. 15. Buy them(masc) for me. – Comprámelos .
