Purim is a joyous Jewish holiday celebrated with costumes, parties, and giving gifts of food and money to friends and charity. Traditions include sending baskets of treats called "shalach monos" to friends, giving half-dollars or more to charity, and making noise to drown out the name of the villain Haman when the Megillah is read. The story of Purim describes how the Jews were saved from a plot to exterminate them orchestrated by Haman through the bravery of Esther, who was queen of Persia. Mordechai and Esther helped convince the king to overturn the decree and allow the Jews to defend themselves, resulting in Haman's downfall
