Apple – iOS
Android
600, 000 apps as of 6/27/12
Android is a Linux-based operating system for mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet computers, developed by Google in conjunction with the Open Handset Alliance.[2] The first Android-powered phone was sold in October 2008,[8] and by the end of 2010 Android had become the world's leading smartphone platform.[9] It had a worldwide smartphone market share of 59% at the beginning of 2012,[10] and as of third quarter 2012, there were 500 million devices activated and 1.3 million activations per day.[11][12]
700, 000 apps as of 9/13/12
TalkBack, Kickback, and SoundBack are apps for the Android Accessibility Service to help blind and vision-impaired users use their devices more easily. These apps add spoken, audible, and vibration functionality services to your device. They are system applications that were pre-installed on most devices and are updated when the accessibility service is improved.
These apps only get activated if you explicitly turn on Accessibility.
Steps to activate Accessibility:1. Go to Settings2. Select Accessibility3. Enable Accessibility checkbox4. Enable TalkBack, KickBack, SoundBack checkboxes
With iOS 6 released on 9/19/12 there are a few new accessibility features:
Vision
VoiceOver: Hear content read aloud including iBooks and built-in apps. Maps – speaking rate is adjustable
Word highlights in speak selection: the ability to highlight the words as they are spoken aloud by text to speech benefits many students with learning disabilities. Speak selection (introduced in IOS 5) now has the same capabilities as many third party apps in IOS 6.
Zoom: Magnifies the screen – now integrated with VoiceOver
Large Text: You can increase the font size to see up to 56-point text in alerts, Calendar, Contacts, Mail, Messages, and Notes.
White on Black: changes the display contrast
Siri: Use her to send messages, schedule appointments, place phone calls and open applications. She understands more languages now and takes dictation using the microphone icon on the keyboard. This feature works with third-party apps, so you can tweet or update your Facebook status.
Hearing
FaceTime communicate using sign language or by lip reading. Can now be done over 3G.
Closed Captioning iPad supports the playback of open captions, closed captions, and subtitling.
Headphone Jack In addition to speakers, iPod includes a standard 3.5-mm audio headphone jack.
Bluetooth Audio iPad supports Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR (Extended Data Rate) technology audio devices.
Mono Audio iPad can route both right- and left-channel audio source material into both earbuds, and adjust the balance.
Custom Vibration Patterns for Alerts: Great for keeping people with hearing disabilities informed of what’s happening on their devices (Twitter and Facebook notifications, etc.).
New Made for iPhone hearing aids: Apple will work with hearing aid manufacturers to introduce new hearing aids with high-quality audio and long battery life.
For iDevices:
AssistiveTouch
Built-in AssistiveTouch lets you enter Multi-Touch gestures using one finger or a stylus (sold separately). It also supports the use of adaptive input devices, like headsets and switches, so you can experience the full capability of iPad. VoiceOver is now integrated with Assistive Touch to help people with multiple disabilities.
Intelligent Onscreen Keyboard with Predictive Text Entry
The onscreen keyboard appears when you need it, and smartly adapts by displaying convenient keys such as “.com” and “@,” saving you keystrokes. The nearly full-size intelligent QWERTY keyboard includes advanced technologies such as auto capitalization and auto correction that make it easier to type and avoid typos and misspellings. You can also have auto corrections and capitalizations spoken aloud to further assist you. iPad even learns as you type, so your speed increases almost immediately.
So many to choose from.

From the maker of Geometer’s Sketchpad, Key Curriculum Press, comes a new geometry app, Sketchpad Explorer. If you’ve ever used Geometer’s Sketchpad, you’ll feel right at home on Sketchpad Explorer. To completely oversimplify, Geometer’s Sketchpad is a piece of software that allows you to do geometric constructions. Create a rectangle by defining four right angles, the drag the corner with the mouse, and you can see an infinite number of examples of rectangles. However, if you just draw four segments that look like a rectangle, when you drag the corner, you’ll see that the shape will change into an number of quadrilaterals that are not rectangles.
Sketchpad Explorer is not a full featured version of Geometer’s Sketchpad. You can’t create the constructions or “sketches” from scratch with the app. What you can do is fully interact with sketches that were created in Geometer’s Sketchpad. The app comes preloaded with sketches on the topics of Elementary Mathematics, Geometry Constructions, Ellipse Constructions, Dynagraphs, and Slope. You can also download a large number of sketches that have been uploaded to Key Curriculum’s Sketch Exchange Community site. The interface has been designed to make this extremely easy to do. You are briefly redirected to Safari to find the sketch you want, but then bumped right back into the app automatically once you have downloaded your sketch.
The following apps are specifically for students with disabilities, but can be used with any students.
There’s a disconnect that happens when symbols are used instead of real images, and the user’s workload is doubled because he or she must first learn the real-life objects for functional independence and then the symbols that represent those objects. Our new Functional Communication System utilizes high-definition pictures, audio and video taken from the real world. Our video library has over 4,000 images and videos to choose from, and more are added every day. You can also use the capabilities of the iPad to completely customize the application for the user – use the camera to shoot your own pictures and video and use the built-in microphone to record your own audio.
There are 42 apps within the Functional Skill System. They offer 4 as samplers.
