Presented at the European Bioinformatics Institute (17th March 2017) We often talk about good code — that we would like to write it, that there isn't enough of it, that it should not be considered an optional attribute of a codebase. We often talk about it but, when it comes to being precise, we don't always agree what constitutes good code, nor do we necessarily share a common view on its value.

Keynote presented at European Testing Conference (9th February 2017) What happens when things break? What happens when software fails? We regard it as a normal and personal inconvenience when apps crash or servers become unavailable, but what are the implications beyond the individual user? Is software reliability simply a business decision or does it have economic, social and cultural consequences? What are the moral and practical implications for software developers? And when we talk of ‘systems’, are we part of the ‘system’? What about the bugs on our side of the keyboard? In this talk we will explore examples of failures in software and its application, and how they affect us at different scales, from user to society.

Ever tried optimizing a slow Python application and thought: “Oh! I wish I could just write this bit it in Rust”? Well, turns out you can! Let’s discuss why Rust is a better choice than C, how to use Rust to make your apps lightning fast and how to get away with it; without your users even noticing. As Infrastructure Engineers at Yelp, the challenge we face everyday is: scale. Yelp is mostly a Python shop, so our work often revolves around making Python applications run faster. Until now, we have been using different techniques: faster interpreters, or, more often, C code. Given its safety guarantees, performance and promise of better tooling than C, we decided we had to give Rust a try. The initial results helped reinforce that there was a lot of opportunity for Rust to play an important role in our production code. Yelp heavily relies on the Apache Avro serialization format for its internal infrastructure. During the talk, we will show how we implemented avro-rs, an Avro serialization/deserialization library in Rust, how we were able to call it from Python (and in theory from any other language) with very little code, using tools such as cbindgen, CFFI and Milksnake. This talk would outline how easy it is to write interoperable code in a performant language like Rust and why a company should invest in Rust, over the many other available alternatives, to run production services.

Open a file in vi and press CTRL-Z to put it into background $ vi filename CTRL-Z filename[New file] [1] + Stopped vi filename $ where 1 is the job number, + or - make the current and previous jobs. 2. How to make it run in foreground ? You can use fg command to make it run in foreground. If more than one job is suspended, you can use fg %n where n is the number is the sequence of the process to make that process come in foreground. $ fg %1 Now you will see vi editor again. 3. How to make it run in background ? (Only stopped jobs) You can use bg command to make it run in background. If more than one job is suspended, you can use bg %n where n is the number is the sequence of the process to make that process come in background. Let us suspend this job one more time. $ vi filename CTRL-Z filename[New file] [1] + Stopped vi filename $ Let us run in background . $ bg %1 4. Another way to suspend a job by using kill command. Run vi in this session. Open another connection through telnet. Now you have two sessions. Type ps command to see what processes are running. $ ps PID TT STAT TIME COMMAND 5226 q7 S 0:01 -ksh (ksh) - This is new shell 6314 q7 R 0:00 ps 5487 ub S 0:00 -ksh (ksh) - This is previous shell 6312 ub S 0:00 vi filename - vi is running in previous session. Now send a STOP signal to the process. kill -l will give you a lo\ist of signals. $ kill -STOP 6312 Now you will see this in the other session [1] + Stopped (signal) vi filename To .

I/O redirection in C shell Please implement input / output redirection in the code posted below. Here are the specs: Your shell will need to support file redirection. Use the same syntax as defined in the Bash shell: a single \'>\' implies that one needs to redirect the standard output of the program being started to the referenced file while a single \'<\' implies the same with standard input. The double \'>>\' implies that standard output will append to an existing file rather than create a new file (similar behavior is required for the \'<<\' operator and standard input). You do not need to implement support for the Bash pipeline operator \'|\'. Before calling exec to begin execution, the child process may have to close stdin (file desriptor 0) and/or stdout (file descriptor 0), open the corresponding file and use the dup2 system call to make it the appropriate file descriptor. Don\'t forget to use the close system call to close the old file descriptor. #include #include #include #include #include #include using namespace std; int change_dir(char* args[]) { if (args[1] == NULL) { chdir(getenv(\"HOME\")); return 1; } else { if (chdir(args[1]) == -1) { cout << \"No such directory\" << args[1]; return -1; } } return 0; } int helper_func(char* args[]) { cout << \"Builtin commands so far are; cd, and help.\ \"; return 0; } int main() { while(true) { cout << \"$ \"; char cmd[128]; cin.getline(cmd,128); vector args; char *line = strtok(cmd, \" \"); char *tmp = line; while (tmp != NULL) { args.push_back(tmp); tmp = strtok(NULL, \" \"); } char** argv = new char*[args.size() + 1]; for (int i = 0; i < args.size(); i++) argv[i] = args[i]; argv[args.size()] = NULL; if (strcmp(cmd, \"exit\") == 0) { { exit(0); } } //else if (strcmp(args[0], \"cd\") == 0) change_dir(args); if (strcmp(cmd, \"cd\") == 0) { change_dir(argv); } if (strcmp(cmd, \"help\") == 0) { helper_func(argv); } else { pid_t pid; pid_t wpid; int status; pid = fork(); if (pid == 0) { if (execvp(args[0], argv) == -1) { perror(\"cmd\"); } exit(EXIT_FAILURE); } else if (pid < 0) { perror(\"cmd\"); } { do { wpid = waitpid(pid, &status, WUNTRACED); } while (!WIFEXITED(status) && !WIFSIGNALED(status)); } } } signal(SIGINT, SIG_IGN); signal(SIGTERM, SIG_DFL); return 0; } Solution #include #include #include #include #include #include using namespace std; int change_dir(char* args[]) { if (args[1] == NULL) { chdir(getenv(\"HOME\")); return 1; } else { if (chdir(args[1]) == -1) { cout << \"No such directory\" << args[1]; return -1; } } return 0; } int helper_func(char* args[]) { cout << \"Builtin commands so far are; cd, and help.\ \"; return 0; } int main() { while(true) { cout << \"$ \"; char cmd[128]; cin.getline(cmd,128); vector args; char *line = strtok(cmd, \" \"); char *tmp = line; while (tmp != NULL) { args.push_back(tmp); tmp = strtok(NULL, \" \"); } char** argv = new char*[args.size() + 1]; for (int i = 0; i < args.size(); i++) argv[i] = args[i]; argv[args.size()] = NULL; if (strcmp(cmd, \.

Corporate and higher education. Two industries that, in the past, have had a clear divide with very little crossover. The difference in goals, learning styles and objectives paved the way for differing learning technologies platforms to evolve. Now, those stark lines are blurring as both sides are discovering they have content that’s relevant to the other. Join Tammy Rutherford as she walks through the pros and cons of corporate and higher ed collaborating. And the challenges of these different technology platforms working together for a brighter future.
