Design Project Digital Media 1 SPRING SUMMER MMD 3033 AUTUMN WINTER SENSORIAL DESIGN FOR FOUR SEASONS IN INSTALLATION ART Mahdieh MolaeiTehrani ID : 1011173381
Proposal Title : Sensorial Design For Four Seasons In Installation Art Background A season is a division of the year, marked by changes in weather, ecology, and hours of daylight. Seasons result from the yearly revolution of the Earth around the Sun and the title of the Earth's axis relative to the plane of revolution. In temperate and Polar Regions, the seasons are marked by changes in the intensity of sunlight that reaches the Earth's surface, variations of which may cause animals to go into hibernation or to migrate, and plants to be dormant. During May, June and July, the northern hemisphere is exposed to more direct sunlight because the hemisphere faces the sun. The same is true of the southern hemisphere in November, December and January. It is the tilt of the Earth that causes the Sun to be higher in the sky during the summer months, which increases the solar flux.
Aim & Objectives To let the public know about the fact of four seasons and what happening in each season. To support the nature and show how life is changing in calendar in every season. To let public experience sensorial design for four seasons. Motivation As a user when trying to touch every season is showing the life is changing with colors and the life going through forward with the time and calendar. There is a screen which is divided by four and each of it present about each season and let public to experience about each season.
Research & Analysis In this bubble chart I tried to show the Seasons, Duration, Temperature and Colors. So you can see what is the season and what exactly is a duration of a year that the season will change. Here I will show you the contrast of all season's color and you can see a difference of colors.
Seasons In this Sketches I just shown that all Season determine by "Amount of Sunlight", "Length of Day", " Height of Sun", "Seasonal Temperate” and "Degrees of Axis". So All four Seasons Such as Spring, Summer, Autumn and winter are depends to all this happening.
Season’s Survey http://freeonlinesurveys.com/rendersurvey.asp?sid=5ek82kmlhufqusr784563
Actually I made the survey to people answer and I can see the range of people whom didn't experienced four seasons in their life.
Idea Development Refer to the diagram above, which is a typical diagram when we learn about seasons in school, due to the axis tilt of our planet with respect to its orbit around the Sun, sometimes our Earth’s northern axis is tilted to the Sun and sometimes the southern axis is tilted to the Sun.
Another way of expressing is there will be time when our Sun is above or north of the equator and time when it is below or south of the equator. Only during the equinoxes, the Sun is exactly on the equator. So, the Sun rises northeast from March to September, and then on today, the Sun will pass by the equator and heads south. After that from September to March next year, our Sun will rise southeast and set southwest. Then on the Vernal or Spring Equinox in March, the Sun once again passes by the equator and heads north and the cycle repeats itself.
Season Color Analysis Spring Changes between the red of the winter and the red of the summer are the value and the chrome. Every season has a red or a green or a blue; but the red of the winter enhances the person winter and it’s not as good on the person Spring.
Summer Some color is missing from some of the palettes for example; black is Missing from the summer palette, because it’s not a flattering color for summers close to the face. Summer: have soft colors and all the pastels for you to choose from; its dark colors are more muted than those of Winter Pastels are lovely for summers.
Autumn Strong colored Autumns look wonderful in a black. Perfect for Autumns also are camel or most shades of the browns. This palette has rich, warm, golden colors, light and dark in tones both muted and vivid. There are some colors – about a dozen – which can be worn by all seasons.
Winter The Winter palette has the range of all dark, vivid, and bright colors. It also has all those very light icy colors. It holds all the primaries, being white, black, pure red, and navy. Winters do not wear most oranges well. Light-medium browns and some camel are not the best choice for winters.
Flowchart In this flowchart first I just shown about the simple intro about each season and duration of each season.
In this flowchart, I tried to show the flowchart of installation.
Content Development
Content Development As you can see in my sketches I do have four sensorial area which detect People when they want to interact with any of seasons.
Content Development And also I will do my installation with Arduino sensor, which can help me to detect, and also Arduino is an open-source electronics prototyping platform based on flexible, easy-to-use hardware and software. It's intended for artists, designers, hobbyists, and anyone interested in creating interactive objects or environments.  Arduino is an open-source electronics prototyping platform based on flexible, easy-to-use hardware and software. It's intended for artists, designers, hobbyists, and anyone interested in creating interactive objects or environments. Arduino can sense the environment by receiving input from a variety of sensors and can affect its surroundings by controlling lights, motors, and other actuators. Resource : http://arduino.cc
VVVV- A Multipurpose Toolkit As I consulted with Mr. KokYoong on Thursday 12 August , Mr. KokYoong advised me to do my installation with vvvv toolkit software that one of our senior also worked with that. vvvv is a graphical programming environment for easy prototyping and development. It is designed to facilitate the handling of large media environments with physical interfaces, real-time motion graphics, audio and video that can interact with many users simultaneously. Responsible for its development is the vvvv group.
Contextual Development Social Context For the social context it would be in every season in some countries they do have the event for each season. For example in Iran for the spring they do have the festival for the spring and for summer which is holiday season they do have the event. Geographical Context For the geographical context for Four Seasons there is a period of months that which will be Spring form Mar-May and for summer June-Aug, Autumn Sep-Nov and for winter would be on Dec-Feb. and for each of this is determined by amount of sunlight and the amount of sunlight determined by height of sun.
Scent Dome Scents and smells are ubiquitous, they are part of our everyday world. Yet, when you enter VR worlds, you almost always lose your sense of smell. Sight is covered, hearing is covered via speakers, even touch is covered via haptic gloves and other accessories. Smell usually remains abandoned, lacking hardware to cover it. So, as I decided to have the about visualization and Sensors together I have plan to use Scent Dome, Which can help me to let public experience also About smells of each seasons and they can feel it.    Resource : http://asia.cnet.com/crave/2005/04/25/scent-dome/
Final Poster
Synopsis Sensorial design for four seasons in installation art is an installation art about four seasons and, as a method is interesting with visuals. The user will able to interact with four seasons and feel the visuals. The concern about this project is about people whom they do not know about four seasons and the cycle of four season and what happened when the season will change. There is a screen, which divided by four parts and each of the part present about one season and is showing the circles of seasons. When the user going to each season, the colors are different with visuals. The audience can expect to see the colors of seasons when changing and also from each season they can experience and going through the next season. The cycles of four seasons are going from the spring, which is the first season, and going next to summer, autumn and winter which is the last season. By changing the colors and visuals for each season, the audience can feel the temperature of season and feeling the season. The theme of this project is exploring about four seasons and let to audience, specially Malaysian people will experience and interacts with seasons.
Thank you 
