Khatereh Rafiee has been
involved with the International
Red Cross since the 1980s.
Today, Khatereh Rafiee
continues to support the group’s
efforts to spread peace and
address humanitarian crises
around the globe. Currently, one
of the International Red Cross’s
main efforts centers on the
elimination of nuclear weapons.
3. The Red Cross explains that
nuclear weapons pose a great
threat to humanity. Today’s
weapons are much stronger than
the bombs used at Hiroshima and
Nagasaki during World War II. If a
nation used these in an act of
war, the humanitarian crisis could
include millions of deaths, critical
injuries, cancer, birth defects,
famine, and even a nuclear
winter, which would change
climate and weather patterns for
years to come.
4. When 150 countries meet in Oslo
to discuss nuclear weapons, the
Red Cross and Red Crescent will
press for an agreement on the
weapons. The organizations
would like to see their use
banned by international law.
When skeptics point out the
difficulty of reaching an
agreement on the weapons,
supporters remind them of
successful bans on land mines
and cluster explosives.
