3. Research
• the strengths of my research were how i went into such detail with what
worked and what didnt and the effects of each aspect of the video. this
gave me a better understanding of what worked with the genre of music
i was planning on using in my music video, and it also helped me to
understand how to utilise each aspect of a mausic video such as cutting
a video and colour correcting in post production. i looked at such music
videos as “praise the lord” and “all the stars” (the song i was using in my
music video) and this gave me a better view of how a hip hop music
videos handled different tempos and rhythms. on the other hand, i think
i could have looked at different genres of music to help my
understanding of how different genres handle slower beats, or even
faster beats, to help me give my music video a more consistent feel to it
and not look out of sync and cuts between tempos too quickly. if i was to
anything differently next time, i would also try and research more than
just music videos, look at other forms of media for inspiration and
information such as magazine, documentaries etc.
4. Planning
• for planning, i decided to create mulitple shot lists to make it easier for
me to plan out my sequence and the shots i was having inside it. the first
shot list i did was just the shots i was planning on taking, how i would
take them and what effect they would have in the video itself. this
helped me to understand the purpose of each scene and their
importance to the video itself. a few of the scenes i mentioned in my
shot list didnt make it to the final video but the shot list helped cover
that by giving my contingency shots to use instead, that had the same
effect. the other shot list i decided to make was for the sequence and
order of the shots. this gave my music video a structure and a template
to follow including duration of clips and short descriptions of each shot.
this helped me alot during my production as it gave me a step by step
guide to how to structure my video, and i used certain segments from
other music videos that had good pacing and clip cutting and put them
into my shot list.
5. Time Management
• my time management is getting over the projects and each project is
showing me how much time should be spent on each section and if i am
spending too much or too little time on them. for example, i spent alot
of time on research on my print project but on my music video, i spent
considerably less time on it and decided to put more time into planning,
helping me to structure and design my music video better and more
detailedly. to make my time management better, i would definately
spend more time on getting my shots as i was running low on shots
towards the end of my editting of my video and you can tell during the
course of the video, having used some clips twice and some not having
hte desired effect. this was down to me not having taken the clips when
needed and not understanding the importance of certain shots to the
video itself, meaning my shots have no real narrative and some are
poorly lit etc. if i was to do this project again, i would spend less time
planning and spending alot more time on gathering clips as this
hinderred my music video drastically while i had spent alot more time
planning, including making an edit of clips and music for inspiration
which took up too much time that could have been put towards editting
or gatherring clips etc.
6. Technical Qualities - camera
for my music video, i almost wanted the video quality itself to be bad quality,
to add an almost home movie comfort to the video, helping to bring a nostalgic
feel the video. this didnt work as intended and just my video look poor quality
and gave each shot considerable hand shake making my clips either unusable
or very poor quality. warp stabilizer fixed this mostly but gave each clip a jelly
effect and didnt look as professional as i wanted. on the other hand, most of
my shots have good movement and keep my clips feel alive and not very
boring. these include pans of the night sky and movement in an urban city,
panning upwards on a skyscraper. when compared to other music videos, there
is a very clear difference in quality, especially in narrative and shot choice. this
is because almost all my shot look mashed together and have no real purpose
next to eachother because my music video has no narrative at all. if i was to do
this project again i would almost definitely include an actor to be in the video
as i thought it would be a good idea to not have one and ofcus on the scenery
and it didnt work.
7. Technical Qualities – editing/post
i feel that my editting was one of my best parts of my video, i added movement
and life to my clips by changing the colour or editting it to the beat etc. this was
done well and helped to merge some clips together even though you can tell
there was a severe lack of clis available which made certain segments of my
video feel boring and some clips being repetitive. i had certain clips that were
used way longer than they should have been such as a slow motion rain clip that
was used for almost 20 seconds which is way too long. other than that though, i
believe that my clips were well editted and had plenty of different editting
styles and had several different scenes near to eachother, making the video
seem more alive and less boring. when doing this project again, i would almost
definitely get more clips to help me with my editting, giving me more to work
with and not having to reuse clips.
8. Aesthetic Qualities
my music video has very distinctive colour scheme and helps to almost
immerse you in its night-time atmoshpere. this is because of when i took my
shots and the effect i used on each clip with the colour correcting i did in post
production. a few scenes had really bad contrasting issues and i dont think
that i fully solved them to fit the rest of the video, but they werent drastic so i
decided to leave them as they were. a few shots were almost iflmed in the day
so didnt really wor as well as intended when trying to convert them to night
time with effect and these are blatantly obvious which clips were filmed in
daylight. this ruined the pacing of the clips and the atmosphere intended to be
made with the video. a few clips were very fun to look at and had plenty of life
and movement to keep the viewer entertained though.
9. Audience Appeal
since my video had no real narrative or actors, it didnt really cater to any real
audience and was alot more boring and lifeless than intended. it didnt fit with
younger viewers due to eat not having actors and anything to focus on, and
didnt fit with older audiences due to it not having the immersive effect i was
trying to achieve so it didnt cater to any specific audience. if any sections would
appear to a younger audience it would be the highly editted sections such as
when cutting the night sky in different colours or maybe the constant switching
of clips from the bridge and the rain. this all falls back to the lack of clips i made
as i decided to not include any of the clips with actors in as i thought the
scenery alone would have been enough but i was wrong and that hinderred my
audience appeal drastically.
11. Feedback 1
• What did you like about the product?
.the way the clips are editted
.the colour scheme. blue/dark blue
• What improvements could have been made to the product?
• More variety of scenes
• Dont edit certain scenes too much. Alot of repitition
12. Feedback 2
• What did you like about the product?
I like the song choice, very relaxxing and fits the shots
I like the urban/night time scenery
I like the editting to the beat
• What improvements could have been made to the product?
I dislike the lack of shots
I dislike the way the sequence is set out
13. Feedback 3
• What did you like about the product?
Kian did the editting of the clips really well and made it seem interesting. This
worked well with the scenery at night which added a nostalgic feeling
• What improvements could have been made to the product?
Different types of shots could have been used, especially shots including an
actor
14. Peer Feedback Summary
• What do you agree with from your peer feedback?
• i agree with all the feedback as the dislikes were in my evaluation as
what i htought didnt work well, so the feedback just repeated what i
already thought. I think a few aspects of the feedbakc were only said
because i was present when it was being written and they didnt want
to seem rude.
• What do you disagree with from your peer feedback?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
15. Peer Feedback Summary
The peer feedback was exactly what i said, and i predicted it would
be. The problems with my music video are very prominent and stick
out very badly so it is hard to cover them with editing and colour
correcting. The main issues were the lack of shots and the bad
contrast in the shots i had and all the feedback covered that. I also
agree with the good feedback as i do think the colour scheme was
good and had an almost nostalgic feeling due to the calm blues and
the urban nighttime aesthetic.
16. Action Plan for future development
In my future projects i would definitely have more clips and a bigger
variety of them so i can fit them into different sections of my music
video that it would fit best. I would also spend maybe abit less time
on my planning and research as even though it helped me in my
production, i spent far too
