Mental Attitude: Staying Active Benefits Male Brains. Japanese researchers followed 2,888 seniors for nearly twelve
years and found that older men who were physically active were 52% less likely to develop dementia or become disabled
than those who were largely sedentary. Journal of Epidemiology, November 2017
Health Alert: Workers Without Paid Sick Leave Often Suffer Ill Effects. An analysis of health data concerning nearly
18,000 workers found that those without paid sick leave exhibited higher levels of mental distress and were 45% more
likely to report that their distress symptoms significantly interfered with their daily life and activities. Study co-author Dr.
LeaAnne DeRigne adds, “Given the disproportionate access to paid sick leave based on race, ethnicity, and income status,
coupled with its relationship to health and mental health, paid sick leave must be viewed as a health disparity as well as a
social justice issue.” American Journal of Orthopsychiatry, September 2017
Diet: Fruits and Veggies May Protect the Lungs. In this study, researchers examined the dietary habits and lung
function of 29,032 individuals and then estimated their exposure to particulate matter air pollution based on their home
address. Surprisingly, they observed that individuals with a diet rich in fruits and vegetables exhibited better lung function
than their neighbors who consumed fewer servings of produce each day. This suggests one or more compounds found in
fruits and vegetables may have a protective effect on the lungs. Environmental Research, September 2017
Exercise: Yoga May Improve Sleep in Breast Cancer Patients. Sleep problems and fatigue are common symptoms for
cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. In this study, researchers found that women undergoing chemotherapy
experienced better quality sleep and were more alert during the day if they took yoga classes when compared with
participants who took stretching classes or refrained from any exercise routine. Cancer, September 2017
Chiropractic: Improving Neck Curve Reduces Neck Pain! Previous studies have associated the loss of cervical curve
with an increased risk for neck pain. In this study, 65 neck pain patients with confirmed loss of cervical lordosis
participated in a three-month home-based isometric neck extension exercise program. Compared with a control group that
did not perform the home-based exercises, the patients in the exercise group not only exhibited an improved cervical
lordotic angle, but they also reported that their neck pain intensity levels fell by half. Doctors of chiropractic commonly
prescribe home-based exercise programs for patients with neck pain.
American Journal of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, September 2017
Wellness/Prevention: Joining Your Kid on the Playground Slide Presents Dangers. Between 2002 and 2015,
emergency departments treated more than 350,000 children under the age of six for injuries related to playground slides.
Of those seen for a broken bone, more than a third had ridden down the slide on another person's lap. Experts say these
injuries can occur when a child's foot is caught on the edge or bottom of the slide, causing it to twist or bend backwards.
As a result, it's recommended to let a child go down a slide on their own.
