Williams, Kirk iSetup OAUG 2004 V3

Notes de l'éditeur

  1. Oracle’s Best Kept Secret (iSetup) is now becoming more widely known. The secret is now unleashed and it is no longer just a tool just for Oracle Consulting or Consulting Firms. End users can now use it to their advantage.
  2. Oracle iSetup automates the configuration and management of setup data for the Oracle E-Business Suite. Oracle iSetup has three components: 1) iSetup Configurator provides a quick and cost-effective approach to setup the Oracle E-Business Suite, 2) iSetup Migrator moves setup parameters across multiple Oracle E-Business Suite instances, and 3) iSetup Reporter helps you monitor setup data at different points in time or across different instances by producing detailed setup reports. By providing complete automation of the setup process, iSetup allows you to implement the Oracle E-Business Suite faster than ever before, with lower risk, and makes it easy for you to manage your setup data on an ongoing basis.
  3. you will be able to: Understand the iSetup Components and Architecture Know the Benefits and Limitations of iSetup Understand the Ongoing Management capabilities of the Oracle E-Business Suite Know the Supported Products, Upcoming Products and Future Direction
  4. Kirk Williams is a Sr. Oracle Consultant and Project Manager at Frontier Consulting, Inc.. Frontier is an Oracle Partner and provides a wide variety of Information Technology services with Oracle eBusiness Suite of Applications, including strategic staffing. We have been servicing our clients since 1996 with our corporate office in Houston, Texas and recent addition of our Offshore Development Center in Hyderabad, India for Oracle development, support and hosting. Kirk speaks frequently on the capabilities of Oracle Applications at Local, Regional and National Conferences, including the international OAUG conference in Australia. Presentations include Oracle Hosted Service Providers, Oracle Procurement Strategies and Oracle iSetup Kirk writes Training Material and Project Plans for Supply Chain and Manufacturing Implementations including work with the recent additions of the Oracle Process Manufacturing, Enterprise Asset Management and Maintenance application.
  5. Presentation agenda will start with by asking everyone here as a courtesy to your fellow attendees to turn off or put on vibrate all cell phones, pagers and other noise makers during the Training Session. Also refrain from answering cell phones during the session and write down any questions you may have until the question and answer sessions that will be provided and at the conclusion of the session. Oracle iSetup 11i.9 Introduction Benefits of iSetup iSetup Configurator, Migrator and Reporter iSetup Process and AIM Tasks Limitations of iSetup Supported Products and Future Direction Q&A – Approximately 10 minutes will be given for questions and answers
  6. iSetup Meeting Business Needs Customers to go-live in days and weeks versus months or years Implementers to configure setup parameters quickly, without the use of Forms and specific Oracle Applications expertise Quick migration and copy of setup data between Applications to reduce time and effort and ensure data consistency between environments Quick creation of Application instances for testing and easy migration of changes from one instance to another
  7. Continued Meeting Business Needs Customers to go-live in days and weeks versus months or years Implementers to configure setup parameters quickly, without the use of Forms and specific Oracle Applications expertise Quick migration and copy of setup data between Applications to reduce time and effort and ensure data consistency between environments Quick creation of Application instances for testing and easy migration of changes from one instance to another
  8. In a typical Implementation Lifecycle, A conference room pilot (CRP) instance is setup manually and data is refined through the forms. Then a gold instance or copy is made into a test and development instance. Work is performed and testing is being performed and refinement of the CRP instance is made when is has passed acceptance. As the lifecycle goes on, a date is set for Performance Assurance Testing and Training instance will be created. A date is then set for creation of the Production instance along with further refinement of setups and data in the CRP instance. A cutoff date set for CRP changes and then the Production instance is created and a Go Live date set. There can be several variations of the Lifecycle, but it will follow something as described above.
  9. Oracle iSetup Benefits Improve Margins – Deliver fixed-priced services in less time and with fewer resources Reduce Cost – Reduce engagement costs to customers as a result of less time and effort to complete setups Reduce Risk – Better utilize your Oracle expertise during implementations with proven and consistent setup data. Verify your setups with customers through detailed reports Reduce Maintenance and Support Costs – Avoid additional time and cost required to fix mistakes during setup with valid configurations. Avoid human error in replicating setups across environments
  10. Before release 11i9, the following products were supported Oracle General Ledger Oracle Accounts Payable Oracle Accounts Receivable Oracle Cash Management Oracle Fixed Assets Oracle Purchasing Since release 11i9, the following have been added Oracle Human Resources Oracle Bill of Materials Oracle Inventory Oracle Engineering Oracle Work in Process Oracle Order Management Oracle Shipping
  11. iSetup Configurator iSetup Configurator automates the initial setup of the Oracle E-Business Suite. It provides you with an intuitive business questionnaire. Based on your responses, it generates the detailed setup parameters and loads them into your E-Business Suite instance. iSetup Migrator iSetup Migrator, a new component in Release 11 i .9, allows you to transfer setup parameters between different instances of the Oracle E-Business Suite. For example, you can migrate your setups from a conference room pilot environment to a production environment, while leaving behind test transactions and data. iSetup Reporter iSetup Reporter, a new component in release 11 i .9, gives you the capability to report on setup objects, including the ability to generate a single, consolidated report of your entire configuration.
  12. The iSetup for initial implementation is based on very simple concept. The concept is that you should be able to specify your requirements in a simple easy to answer way. Once your requirements are specified you should be able to do your setup without doing any additional steps. iSetup Configurator includes the following new features in Release 11i.9. Multiple Legal Entities And Business Group Support iSetup Configurator supports global companies that have multiple subsidiaries operating in different countries. iSetup Configurator automatically establishes multiple business groups and legal entities based on where your subsidiary companies operate around the globe. You can also share locations, calendars, charts of accounts, and sets of books between your organizations. iSetup will even generate multiple sets of books for your global accounting needs automatically based on Oracle leading practices. For smaller companies, iSetup streamlines the setup further with a fully-defaulted business structure and accounting setup. Enhanced Organization Structure Wizard The HR Organization Structure Wizard walks you through step by step to set up complex work structures for your organization that includes Operating Companies, Legal Entities and Business Groups. Improved Load Restart Process This release of iSetup simplifies the load process. If your load process fails, you can restart the load from a simple user interface. iSetup keeps track of what setups have already loaded successfully and continues from where it left off.
  13. The main iSetup user interface runs on the web at isetup.oracle.com. The iSetup Loader and APIs run inside your applications instance. The two parts of iSetup communicate with each other over the web. You use a standard web browser to answer the interview questions and create a configuration. You can do this even if your hardware is not yet installed. When your hardware is ready and you have installed the E-Business Suite, run the iSetup Loader concurrent program to populate the setups directly into the database. The iSetup Loader connects to isetup.oracle.com and downloads your configuration automatically.
  14. We will cover some of the basics of the iSetup Configurator web screens from logging on to saved configurations. I will walk through a live demo of the Configurator and setups.
  15. When completing a configuration, you will notice the items marked in Red either has an error or needs to be completed. You will want to drill down to the lowest level of the tree where the errors show up and complete these items. Once they have been validated, the Red asterisk will go away. Once they have all been removed, it is almost ready to be generated a configuration.
  16. Other errors may popup in a window with an explanation of what needs to be completed. When these have all gone away and saved successfully, a configuration can be generated.
  17. This is a sample of the files that are generated in the zip file from a successful configuration. We will generate on so you will be able to view this part of the generation. It is time to do a Live Demonstration. (DEMO)
  18. The following are the Administration Tasks for an iSetup Implementation. Installation of a Central Instance with a dbc file for Each Remote Instance Mapping Databases for Central, Source and Target Instances Preparing Target Instances for Migrations Recompile Database Objects Set Open Cursor Limit from 500 to 750 Set Sleep Seconds for Concurrent Manager
  19. This is a map of the recommended Database Topology. The Central Instance is where you will control gathering information from a source instance and migrate it to a target instance. The Central Instance can hold the migrations and reports gathered from the other instances to use as an Audit Trail.
  20. We will go through some of the Administration web pages to see how to map and maintain the database instances.
  21. The main requirement is that the dbc file generated on the other instances be copied to the Central instance for mapping.
  22. The dbc file and SID will be validated for creating the mapping
  23. The iSetup for initial implementation is based on very simple concept. The concept is that you should be able to specify your requirements in a simple easy to answer way. Once your requirements are specified you should be able to do your setup without doing any additional steps. iSetup Migrator includes the following features in Release 11 i .9. Pre-Defined Selection Set Templates for Creating Snapshots iSetup Migrator allows you to choose what setup objects to migrate by providing you with a number of pre-defined selection sets. A selection set is a set of related objects that support common business needs. You can also choose what subset of records you want to migrate by setting filter conditions. For example you can migrate a specific set of books or all the setups for a specific operating unit. iSetup saves the extracted setup data as a Snapshot, which allows you to conveniently load the extracted setup data to multiple target instances. Data Transformation During Load Prior to loading extracted setup data, you can perform certain data transformations on the extracted data. You can change the record name to create a new record and assign a new parent to the record. For example, you can clone an inventory organization and assign it to a different operating unit. Flexible Architecture You can run iSetup Migrator from an instance that is different from your source and target instances. iSetup has visibility to all the E-Business Suite instances running on your network, allowing you to manage your migrations from a single point.
  24. Migrator UI runs on your internal network either in a dedicated instance or in one of your live instances. You choose the source instance, choose the objects you want to migrate, and specify object filter criteria. iSetup Exporter calls the APIs for each object and generates a packaged configuration file on the source instance. The iSetup Loader runs on the target instance, reads the configuration file, and calls the APIs in the correct sequence to populate the data. The Packaged Configuration File is the same format as used by iSetup Configurator (zip file containing one XML file per object).
  25. After we create migration selection sets from the predefined templates, we can migrate part or all of the information. I will demo this after we cover some of the information in the migration phase.
  26. There are currently 14 pre-defined templates to choose from. After we extract information from a source instance, we can load or migrate it to a target instance.
  27. The options are delete a selection set, duplicate, update or run extract.
  28. Select a source instance to extract data from and continue.
  29. On the larger extracts, like a full Financials or Discrete Manufacturing extract, you may want to schedule it for a later run. These extracts will take some time to complete.
  30. The extract snapshot can be downloaded to your local system or left in a central instance for an audit trail.
  31. This is the extract page you can view the log or download the snapshot.
  32. This is a sample of the snapshot for loading Suppliers. You can view the xml file from the zip file if you want to view the output.
  33. Here is where you can view the loads that have been completed. We will not demo this due to the time constraint of this session.
  34. Here is the other way you can load the snapshot from an iSetup configuration like you would when you first start an implementation.
  35. Same thing applies here about reviewing and editing the data for example a GL Calendar.
  36. More information concerning the load request from a migration.
  37. There is also the ability to restart a failed setup. This is the 3 options for restart depending on the issue you may run into. Restart from a Failed Setup Step Restart from the Next Setup Step Skip Failed Step and its dependencies Live Demonstration (DEMO)
  38. The iSetup for initial implementation is based on very simple concept. The concept is that you should be able to specify your requirements in a simple easy to answer way. Once your requirements are specified you should be able to do your setup without doing any additional steps. The iSetup Reporter includes the following features in Release 11 i .9. Multiple Report Formats iSetup Reporter allows you to generate reports in text or HTML format. You can save these reports to your desktop or send them directly to printers. The HTML option allows you to browse your configuration details by setup object. Report On Snapshot Or Configuration Data iSetup Reporter allows you to generate reports from the Snapshot created during an extract. You can also report on a Configuration you created with iSetup Configurator, even before you load it into your Oracle E-Business Suite instance.
  39. Reporter leverages the iSetup architecture by launching the extractor for the objects you specify and then transforms the XML output into HTML reports you can view online or print. The comparison mode compares two configuration files and reports on the differences.
  40. Here is where you can review your report history with options to view or delete
  41. You can report from an iSetup Configuration or a snapshot extract or from your local system.
  42. You also have a way to search from existing reports you have run in the past
  43. Reports normally complete quickly, but if you have several, you can schedule them to all run at a later time.
  44. You can monitor the progress of the report submitted.
  45. When it completes, you can view the log file or the report.
  46. You can view the output from a printable page in the web browser and format to your needs.

  49. AIM (Application Implementation Methodology) The 3 main areas to focus on would be the Business Requirements Definition, Business Requirements Mapping , Business System Testing and Production Migration. The timeline is roughly the matrix you would want to follow.
  50. The basic iSetup Integration Strategy is as follows.
  51. Roughly a Project timeline, depends on the complexity of the Project.
  52. Using the iSetup Configurator loading multiple instances exclusively, this is what was the only thing available before 11i9 of the Oracle Applications. This is still a valid method of loading.
  53. This is using an alternate approach, again before the 11i9 version and is still a valid method.
  54. Configuring Test Scripts is an important step that should also be given the appropriate attention in an implementation
  56. Oracle iSetup automates and simplifies the configuration (initial setup), migration, and reporting of setup data for the Oracle E-Business Suite. With many enhancements to iSetup Configurator, and with the introduction of two new components, iSetup Migrator and iSetup Reporter, Oracle iSetup continues to provide an automated setup process that enables a low-risk, high-efficiency implementation and streamlined ongoing management of the Oracle E-Business Suite.
