Google Assignment
John Kim M. Pasno August 7, 2013
1. Gmail
a. What were Paul’s motivations in creating Gmail back then? Explain.
- He was in college that time. If he wanted to check his email, he had to go back to his dorm room. So he
thought “that’s just stupid. I should be able to just check it anywhere.” So he wanted to make some kind
of Web-based email.
b. How did these motivations reflect in the product he started in Gmail?
- Because of his motivations in the product, He invented a great startup that is very easy and comfortable to
use. He created a product that has many useful features that will help people with there work.
c. Did his vision carried out in the present? How has Gmail grown since then?
- Gmail has grown to a larger scale. It now has a clear interface where you can easily send emails and other
new features that are very useful for people who are always sending emails.
d. What particular feature in Gmail do you like the most? Why?
- My favorite feature in Gmail would be the same as Buchheit. It is the “Autocomplete” because you don’t
have to remember the address, once you typed the email address it will be saved and you can use the address
again without typing it. This will make you send emails much faster.
e. What particular feature would you like to implement if you were anSA/Engineer on Gmail? Why?
- Gmail has now many useful features, but if I were an engineer on Gmail I would like to implement a feature
that will help the users use Gmail easily. Because nowadays many people are still confused in sending an
email. With that feature they will be able to send emails easily.
f. Site one striking lesson you learned from the interview. Explain.
- Before they launch Gmail they had faced many problems. They even thought that this project would never
work. But with many trials and errors they have created a product that helped a lot of people to day. I’ve
learned that no matter how hard it is and how difficult it would get, you have to be persevering in you work
and never stop to learn.
2. Google+
a. How does Google+ fit in the over-all strategy of Google? Explain.
- Google+ is Google’s Social Network, or at least, that is what we all think it is. It is Google’s effort to push out
Facebook and to be the biggest not just in search, but also in social. But in fact Google+ is not intended to be
that Facebook killer. Yes, off course, if Google gets the chance, they will definitely try to beat Facebook. But
Google+ in fact is more about data: it will be part of every Google product in the future.
b. How did Google+ differentiate itself from other social networks?
- At the present, Google Plus, amongst other social networks are proving their importance in SEO. This is set to
only increase in time and if we look at how Google Plus is growing when compared to Facebook it's a probable
statement that Plus is going to come out on top.Facebook lacks any feature like this and requires other tactics
in order to gain a following. The process of gaining a fan base on Facebook can be painfully long and bring in
a somewhat irrelevant audience whereas the followers you receive from Google + Communities are targeted
and have an active interest in your brand.
c. What particular feature in Google+ do you like the most?
- The feature I like the most in Google+ is the “Hangouts” feature.
Hangouts will change the world from individual relationships; through business collaboration to the way
business is run. They've ready changed the media world, bringing the audience into the studio, turning any
person with a smart phone to a reporter.
d. What particular feature would you like to implement if you were anSA/Engineer on Google+? Why?
- If I were an engineer on Google+, I would like to implement the feature “Google Chat”. Nowadays, many
people are on to chatting and many chatting apps are now available like WeChat, Line, and Facebook
Messenger. With this all Google+ plus user’s can easily chat with anyone in their contacts without switching to
another sites/devices.
e. Site one striking lesson you learned from the interview/materials. Explain.
- Google+ is now the Second largest social network next to Facebook. They succeeded because they know
what the people want; they know what will be the best for the users.
What I learned is, it is really important for an IT company to know the perspectives of a user’s in other to gain
the people’s attention to your product.
3. Google X
a. Why was Google X created? What were its missions and how does it fit into Google’s vision?
- Google calls Google X a “Moonshot Factory” an environment where they are looking at science fiction like
ideas to solve current world problems and with solutions that are hardware based.
b. What is your opinion on the moonshots that Google plans to create? Would they be impactful in the long
term?
- Google plans are very ambitious. Their inventions would be really helpful to people who needs the
assistance of technology. I think if Google would make their products more interesting, they will be impactful
for a long term.
c. As of today there are 3 products from Google X: Google Glass, Google Self-driving Car, Project Loon. What is
your favorite from the 3? What particular feature in that project/product do you like the most?
- The product the caught my attention is the “Google Glass”. For me Google Glass is all in one product. It is
truly a glimpse at the future of mobile connectivity, it’s hands-free control, and the feature I like the most is
you can take photos and record a video.
d. What particular feature would you like to implement if you were anSA/Engineer on Google X working on the
chosen product/project from above? Why?
- If I were an engineer in Google X, I would like to implement a product that will make the Internet faster.
Today, many people are using Internet for the work, studies, and the like. Sometimes it is really hard to
connect to the Internet because of slow connection. In this age where Internet is a necessity, we need faster
Internet connection.
e. Site one striking lesson you learned from the interview/materials. Explain.
- I’m inspired that Google X is making products not just for the convenience of the people but also for helping
to solve world problems. I’ve learned that technology is not just for us humans but also for everything around
us like the plants, animal, and the like. We must create a product that will benefit us all.
