• The combining form parathyroid/o refers to
the parathyroid, as in the follow:
• Parathyroidal (pertaining to the parathyroid)
• Parathyroidectomy (surgical removal of the
parathyroid)
• The parathyroid consists of four small glands
near the thyroid gland, and secretes PTH
which regulates calcium levels in the blood

• The combining form pituitar/o refers to the
pituitary gland, as in the following:
• Hypopituitarism (insufficient function of the
pituitary gland)
• The pituitary gland is located in the sella
turcica and secretes hormones which regulate
all the other glands of the body, as well as
growth hormone.
