1. Who am I? My dynasty united China under one rule. We used all of the same money, built roads, and ruled with an iron fist, using legalism to kill anyone who opposed us and burnt books that spoke out against us. We also started the building of the Great Wall of China. Who am I? _________________________________ My dynasty was started by a peasant who worked his way up to becoming an military general. We believed that only the most talented people should hold jobs and started making an exam that helped pick the most talented people. We brought about the first use of war lords, Chinese writing, jade and bronze. Unfortunately we did not take good care of the poor and the saying, “the rich get richer and the poor get poorer” took effect and our dynasty collapsed. 3. Who am I? My dynasty lasted for 800 years. We knew that the king was the king since it was mandated from god and that he would rule correctly. The king had help ruling his area as they instituted the first bureaucracy. Who am I? _____________________________ Zhou

4. Since the kings may have been mandated by god, could they be dethroned? If the kings did not keep the gods happy they could be dethroned. The way the Chinese people knew the gods weren’t happy is when a natural disaster would occur.

5. Why was the silk road named the “silk” road? Silk was the most precious thing China could trade. People from all over want to own silk and in order to get it they had to travel the road to get it. It was the highest demanded item to trade for.

6. Why did many people become tenant farmers? What is a tenant farmer? Definition: a farmer who works land owned by another and pays rent either in cash or in sharing of product Why? Every generation split its land up for its sons soon there wasn’t enough land so they sold off their land to an aristocrat instead Imagine you have 100 acres of land and 5 sons….then those 5 sons each have 5 sons….how much land does each grandson end up with? 4 Acres

7. Since there were so many mountainous areas in China how did they farm? They carve the mountains into flat areas known as terraces.

8. Why were the terra-cotta soldiers made? The 6,000 soldiers and horses were made to protect the great Qin’s tomb.

9. Even though the civil service exam sounded like a good idea, what was it’s major flaw?
