Sparrows (1926), directed by William Beaudine and starring Mary Pickford, has reviews that focus
on its non–story elements as well, praising the spectacle of the film over its narrative. Like the
aforementioned Keaton films, this film has a relatively simple plot. A group of kidnapped orphans
tries to escape their evil captor, led by the oldest of the orphans, who Mary Pickford portrays. The
climax of the film is the extended escape scene, which features the children crawling along a broken
tree branch above a swamp full of hungry alligators. Again, like the reviews of the Keaton films,
critics considered the story of this film lackluster, as the New York Times paper released on
September 20th, 1926,4 states: "Miss Pickford's excellent portrayal of the little mother leaves only
the desire for a more plausible story." This same reviewer states: "As this film was produced before
the plot, it is presumed that the exciting experience had nothing to do with the film's story," as well

The haunted attraction, Field of Screams opens between the end of September and continues to the
early beginnings of November. Its located in Lancaster, Pa in a small town with lots of corn fields.
This makes the ride there a little earie, which adds to the experience. Lancaster is about a three–hour
drive from my place, so having the ride there be creepy gets me hyped to go there. My standards for
haunted attractions include, the fright factor, atmosphere, and interaction. Field of Screams includes
4 attractions for the price of 34 dollars, although the price differs depending on the day that you go.
One attraction is a haunted hayride, then there are 2 haunted houses known as The Asylum and The

There were small lines for these attractions, but at max, it was only a ten–minute wait. Both
attractions were walk through, placed in dark rooms with actors dressed up in gore trying to scare
you. Many of the actors would just yell at the walkers as they passed. There is a high jump factor in
some of the areas of the houses, however overall these two haunted attractions were like other
haunted houses. The actors in the haunted houses weren't as touchy as the ones on the hay ride, so
that lowered the fright factor even though they did a good job hopping out of unseen spaces and

Critique: I found this essay to be enlightening in several ways. Not only was the information
presented in an organized way, but it was also very interesting. I agree with the author's statements
about the trials and tribulations of relationships, and I find myself agreeing most with his biological
theory of attraction. I especially liked the psychological direction of the essay, as it remained fairly
objective and scientific while still presenting new and different ideas as witnessed by his inclusion
of historical facts with the addition of his own unique analysis and commentary

MirrorMask An Unrealistic Fantasy World
Known for its innovative imagery, the 2005 fantasy film MirrorMask rejected realistic special
effects. In one of the film's most engaging sequences, the main character Helena is transformed into
an evil princess by a group of mechanical dolls singing, "Close to You" by the Carpenters. An
underground 'cinema of attractions', the sequence sought to engage the audience in the artistic
wonder of inventive special effects. By experimenting with special effects, the scene rejected both
perceptually realism and photorealism. By rejecting the normalized standard of realism in special
