Opticks is an open source remote sensing application and development framework that was originally developed for the Air Force but was opened to allow more developers to contribute plugins. It performs image and video analysis on data from sensors like SAR and thermal cameras. The project was opened under the LGPL license to encourage collaboration while keeping the core application open. Today the development is fully open source and the project balances community and customer needs while continuing to vet features for export control compliance.

The presentation will cover how AppHub eases the continuous configuration and deployment of enterprise applications and how it helps vendors reach out to the market. A live demonstration of the platform, from asset cataloguing to packaging, advertising and deploying, will cover the benefits of AppHub for OSS producers, OpenStack users and Cloud providers. AppHub is a project bringing together OW2, UShareSoft and Fraunhofer Fokus. AppHub is supported by the European Commission.

This presentation is about engaging mainstream users for OSS ecosystem sustainability. Open source is becoming mainstream but there are still looming uncertainties about the sustainability of its ecosystem made of some keystone projects and many SMEs. The user is the missing component of the OSS ecosystem’s sustainability. We must put the user back into the equation. This presentation introduces the Market Readiness Levels index, the OW2 OSS Good Governance initiative and the ReachOut beta-testing platform. three initiatives leveraging the resources and experience of OW2’s European community of open source projects with the ambition to engage mainstream users and make them more comfortable and more committed to the long-term term sustainability and success of the European open source ecosystem.
