Aeolus is Comcast’s new internal Big Data system for providing access to an integrated view of a wide variety of high-quality, near-real-time and batch data. Such integration can enable data scientists to uncover otherwise hidden trends, anomalies, and powerful predictors of business successes and failures. But integrating data across silos in a large enterprise is fraught with peril. There typically are few standards on naming conventions and data representation, and spotty documentation at best. The old rule of thumb often applies: 70% of the analysts’ time goes into data wrangling, while only 30% goes toward the actual analyses and simulations. The goal of the Athene Data Governance Platform within Aeolus is to invert this ratio. This talk will explain how Comcast is using Apache Avro and Atlas for end-to-end data governance, the challenges faced, and methods used to address these challenges. Avro provides a lingua franca for data representation, data integration, and schema evolution. All data published for community consumption must have an associated avro schema in Atlas. Every step in its journey through Aeolus, in flight or at rest, is captured in Atlas. Atlas’ extensibility has allowed us to add or update various entity types (e.g., avro schemas, kafka topics, object store pseudo-directories) and lineage types (e.g., storing streaming data in object storage; embellishing and re-publishing streaming data; performing aggregations and other transformations on data at rest; and evolution of schemas with compatibility flags). Transformation services notify Atlas of lineage links via custom asynchronous kafka messaging. Atlas provides self-service data discovery and lineage browsing and querying, via full-text search, DSL query language, or gremlin graph query language. Example queries: “Where is data from kafka topic X stored?” “Display the journey of data currently stored in pseudo-directory X since it entered the Aeolus system”. “Show me all earlier versions of schema S, and whether they are forward/backward compatible with each other.”

This describes the concept of a Process Oriented Architecture. A Process Oriented Architecture is a way of linking process areas to actual (desired) interactions – customer (external interacting party) service journeys through the organisation. It allows two views of any process to be maintained and operated: 1. External view – that experienced by user 2. Internal view – that worked on by the organisational competency An organisation will interact will multiple external parties. Each external party will have a number of interaction paths or journeys. These journeys are the routes of experience of external parties. These routes of experience need to be mapped (as) seamlessly (as possible) to internal organisational operational process competency groupings. HSBC addressed this challenge by integrating its on-premises mainframe with AWS services such as AWS Lambda, Amazon Kinesis, and Amazon DynamoDB. This integration enables the bank to engage in real time with millions of retail banking customers in a more personal, dynamic, and useful way. The bank applies business logic to its transaction data, and it harnesses the information it gleans to communicate directly with customers through a messaging platform that runs on AWS. Microservices, Monoliths, SOA and How We Got Here

We present a solution for streaming anomaly detection, named “Coral”, based on Spark, Akka and Cassandra. In the system presented, we run Spark to run the data analytics pipeline for anomaly detection. By running Spark on the latest events and data, we make sure that the model is always up-to-date and that the amount of false positives is kept low, even under changing trends and conditions. Our machine learning pipeline uses Spark decision tree ensembles and k-means clustering. Once the model is trained by Spark, the model’s parameters are pushed to the Streaming Event Processing Layer, implemented in Akka. The Akka layer will then score 1000s of event per seconds according to the last model provided by Spark. Spark and Akka communicate which each other using Cassandra as a low-latency data store. By doing so, we make sure that every element of this solution is resilient and distributed. Spark performs micro-batches to keep the model up-to-date while Akka detects the new anomalies by using the latest Spark-generated data model. The project is currently hosted on Github. This talk will address how a new architecture is emerging for analytics, based on Spark, Mesos, Akka, Cassandra and Kafka (SMACK). Popular architecture like Lambda separate layers of computation and delivery and require many technologies which have overlapping functionality. Some of this results in duplicated code, untyped processes, or high operational overhead, let alone the cost (i.e. ETL). I will discuss the problem domain and what is needed in terms of strategies, architecture and application design and code to begin leveraging simpler data flows. We will cover how the particular set of technologies addresses common requirements and how collaboratively they work together to enrich and reinforce each other.

To overcome these problems, we suggest several solutions to improve language development, including using modeling languages specifically designed to define modeling languages, continuous testing and prototyping, and keeping language users in the loop.
