• The term R&B stands for ‘Rhythm and Blues.’
• It is a genre of popular Africa-American music.
• This style of music started out in the late 1940s and it was applied to blues
• records around that time.
• The meaning attached to R&B has changed over the years. In the 1950s it became used to
refer to music styles that developed from and incorporated electric blues as well as gospel
and soul music.
• By the 1970s, R&B was used as a blanker term for soul and funks.
• By the 1980s, a new style of R&B developed known as ‘Contemporary R&B.’ This style of
R&B combines elements of rhythm, blues, soul, funk, pop, hip hop and dance.
