SoftFIRE – federated testbed
The SoftFIRE Federated testbed is aiming at creating an ecosystem of innovative actors interested in
developing and testing a federated and distributed NFV/SDN platform in the areas of
interoperability, security and programmability as preparation for 5G programmability.
4 testbeds connected: Fraunhofer Fokus, Ericsson, Telecom Italia, University of Surrey
For ecosystem creation focus on events (InterOpTest, Hackathons, Challenges) and Open Calls
for Experimentation (three waves to be carried out) with two objectives:
Development of platform extensions on top of federated testbed
Development of applications/services
Open Call for “Interoperability”(closed September 20th, 2016)
Criteria:
Quality and relevance of the proposal,
feasibility on the current version of the platform,
business impact
Result: 26 respondents for the first call. Quick evaluation, three months for running the experiment and
conclusion with an event to practically use and advertise the results.

Funding is available in two categories of Calls:
Experiments. This Call solicits for experiments that design and deploy advanced (experimental) applications,
notably applications that will leverage data and resources from multiple administratively and geographically
dispersed IoT testbeds. These experiments should be of a short duration (a maximum of 6 months). Per
proposal a budget can be requested for up to a maximum of €50K per experiment.
This call is split in two categories of experiments:
1) Scientific excellence targeting experiments validating novel technologies around the IoT concept and its
integration with Cloud and Big Data paradigms that clearly advance the current state‐of‐the‐art.
2) Innovation by SME and/or Entrepreneurs targeting experiments that validate IoT‐based solutions
that have a large potential for commercial exploitation in existing or new products or services.
Extensions via Integration of new IoT testbeds. In order to enlarge the critical mass of the existing
experimentation support capacity offered by the 4 existing FIESTA-IoT testbeds, as well as to probe the
interoperability solutions developed within the project, we are seeking new testbeds that can provide datasets
and data-streams on the domains of interest of the exisitng ones.
However, testbeds offering extra scenarios (smart agriculture, underwater,
etc) will be considered for inclusion. Integration of the new testbeds should be
accomplished in a maximum of 6 months. Per roposal a budget can be
requested for up to a maximum of €50K per extension.
