• Fashion and other areas of Design at a nascent
phase regionally – though fashion may be better
understood by the general public
• Activism, Evangelism needed – to generate
interest, demand, support etc.
• Embrace new technology and new media (incl.
social media) in our solutions and responses.
• Policy can support the development of local
industries
• Public discourse can contribute to the
development of policy

My colleague Michael Lee Poy and I just completed a project called The Ministry of Design – from Cottage Industry to State Enterprise. I will u
Our aim was to move discussion about design away from ‘fairy dusting’ and move design away from an afterthought on a project, and connect design to many more different aspects of the economy and planning in general. We succeeded in generating a forum for discussion about design. As academics, we also wanted to address the scarcity of literature on design in the Caribbean / Developing World, and were surprised to receive almost 40 paper proposals from all over the world including the UK, the USA, Jamaica, PR, DR, Barbados and T&T. 20 papers were presented on the day. We were able to encourage both academics and non-academics to contribute to the discussion.
