Gorges
1.
2. Formation of gorges
Gorges are deep ,narrow and steep sided river valleys.
They are mostly formed when the process of forming a
waterfall is repeated frequently, as the waterfall retreats
upstream.
3. Gorges are also formed where:
-a river flows along a line of weakness.
-a river maintains its course across a landscape which is
slowly being uplifted.
-a river cuts across a plateau composed of horizontal and
alternate layers of hard and soft rocks.
5. Since there is a risk of flooding on these gorges, some countries,
like CHINA, have used this to their advantage;
-the three gorges dam project was established to control flood,
provide hydroelectric power and navigation.
