2. What is the male gaze? ‘Mulvey’s male gaze’ is a Feminist theory developed highlighting the power imbalance and explaining how women are projected in the media and in film. They look at: Between men and women Analysingthe way men see women The way women view themselves and other women
3. The Feminist Theory Mulvey explains that in film and in the media women are being “exposed” to a male audience where they are represented as maybe sexual objects. Films mainly focus on womens assets at a heterosexual mans point of view and therefore benefits the male audience much more than a female audience In films they are being represented as objects mainly
4. Further… She goes on to say that sexism can occur through the way women are shown in films She says that they over sexualize the women’s body even though there is no reason for the woman or her body to be represented in this way as it this irrelevant to the storyline or an advertised product.
5. The Criticisms Some people may argue that women enjoy being looked at. Some films focus on the male body much more than the women but this could be because the directors have contradicted the theory. Not all heroes in the film are male in some films both the hero and the villain are female.
