2. Matthew 3:13-17 Then Jesus came from Galilee
to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. (14)
And John tried to prevent Him, saying, "I need to
be baptized by You, and are You coming to me?"
(15) But Jesus answered and said to him, "Permit
it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill
all righteousness." Then he allowed Him. (16)
When He had been baptized, Jesus came up
immediately from the water; and behold, the
heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the
Spirit of God descending like a dove and
alighting upon Him. (17) And suddenly a voice
came from heaven, saying, "This is My beloved
Son, in whom I am well pleased."
4. WHERE DO YOU GO TO FIND A
DEFINITION OF BAPTISM?
• Dictionary.com - BAPTISM - Ecclesiastical. a
ceremonial immersion in water, or
application of water, as an initiatory rite or
sacrament of the Christian church.
• Strong's Concordance - baptizó: to dip, sink -
Short Definition: I dip, submerge, baptize
• Definition: lit: I dip, submerge, but
specifically of ceremonial dipping; I baptize.
5. BAPTISM
A.Many have been baptized, but NOT in
the way the Bible teaches.
B.If you have NOT been baptized in
keeping with God's instruction given in
the New Testament, then all you have
done is gotten wet.
C.We learn from the Word of God that for
baptism to be acceptable in the sight
of God there must be the right person,
the right process, and the right
purpose.
6. I. THE RIGHT PERSON
A.One must believe in Christ and repent of
sins
1. Mark 16:16 He who believes and is
baptized will be saved; but he who does
not believe will be condemned.
2. Acts 2:38 Then Peter said to them,
"Repent, and let every one of you be
baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for
the remission of sins; and you shall
receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
7. I. THE RIGHT PERSON
B. Infants are NOT capable of' believing and
have no sin of which to repent; thus, infants
are NOT fit subjects for baptism.
C. Jesus taught that children are innocent and
pure.
1. Matthew 18:3 and said, "Assuredly, I say
to you, unless you are converted and
become as little children, you will by no
means enter the kingdom of heaven.
2. Matthew 19:14 But Jesus said, "Let the
little children come to Me, and do not
forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of
heaven."
8. I. THE RIGHT PERSON
D. There is no biblical authority for infant
baptism.
1. No command
2. No example
3. No implication
E. Thus, if you were “baptized" as an
infant, you were NOT baptized
scripturally.
9. II. THE RIGHT PROCESS
A. The word "baptism" in our English Bible
is transliterated from the Greek term
baptizo that means “immersion."
B. To baptize means "to dip; to submerge; to
overwhelm.”
C. It involves going to a place where there is
a sufficient amount of water to be
immersed. - John 3:23 Now John also was
baptizing in Aenon near Salim, because
there was much water there. And they
came and were baptized.
10. II. THE RIGHT PROCESS
D.It is a burial, - Romans 6:3-5 Or do you not
know that as many of us as were baptized
into Christ Jesus were baptized into His
death? 4 Therefore we were buried with
Him through baptism into death, that just
as Christ was raised from the dead by the
glory of the Father, even so we also
should walk in newness of life. 5 For if we
have been united together in the likeness
of His death, certainly we also shall be in
the likeness of His resurrection,
11. II. THE RIGHT PROCESS
E. It requires going down into and coming up
out of the water. - Acts 8:38-39 So he
commanded the chariot to stand still. And
both Philip and the eunuch went down into
the water, and he baptized him. 39 Now when
they came up out of the water, the Spirit of
the Lord caught Philip away, so that the
eunuch saw him no more; and he went on his
way rejoicing.
F. So, sprinkling or pouring water on the head
is NOT a biblical baptism.
G. If you had water poured or sprinkled on you,
then you were NOT baptized scripturally.
12. III. THE RIGHT PURPOSE
A. Baptism is “for the remission of sins". - Acts
2:38 Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and
let every one of you be baptized in the name
of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and
you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
B. Paul was told, “Arise and be baptized, and
wash away your sins" Acts 22:16 And now
why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized,
and wash away your sins, calling on the
name of the Lord.'
C. Jesus said, “He that believes and is baptized
shall be saved” (Mark 16:16).
13. III. THE RIGHT PURPOSE
D. Baptism is NOT done after one is already saved,
but a person is immersed in order to enter into
Christ and become a child of God. - Galatians
3:26-27 For you are all sons of God through faith
in Christ Jesus. 27 For as many of you as were
baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
E. Baptism brings salvation - 1 Peter 3:21 There is
also an antitype which now saves us--baptism
(not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the
answer of a good conscience toward God),
through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,
F. If you were taught that you were saved before
baptism, then you were NOT baptized "for the
remission of sins;" you were NOT baptized
properly in God's sight.
14. III. THE RIGHT PURPOSE
G. According to, those baptized without being properly
taught must be baptized AGAIN correctly. - Acts 19:1-6
And it happened, while Apollos was at Corinth, that
Paul, having passed through the upper regions, came
to Ephesus. And finding some disciples 2 he said to
them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you
believed?" So they said to him, "We have not so much
as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit." 3 And he said
to them, "Into what then were you baptized?" So they
said, "Into John's baptism." 4 Then Paul said, "John
indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying
to the people that they should believe on Him who
would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus." 5
When they heard this, they were baptized in the name
of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid hands on
them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke
with tongues and prophesied.
15. III. THE RIGHT PURPOSE
H. If your baptism was NOT biblical (as a
penitent believer for the remission of
sins), you are still in your sins and need to
be re-baptized with the right
understanding of its purpose. - Romans
6:17 But God be thanked that though you
were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from
the heart that form of doctrine to which
you were delivered.
16. HAVE YOU BEEN
SCRIPTURALLY BAPTIZED?
A.Were you the right person for baptism,
able to believe and repent?
B.Were you baptized with the right
process, immersion?
C.Were you baptized for the right
purpose, remission of sins, salvation?
